Performance anxiety.

I have a fear of heights; but get me angry enough, and I'll climb the highest mast in the Navy just to prove that I can.

Your daughter seems to have a fear of being tested; but get her angry enough, and she'll outperform her older brother just to prove that she can.

Yeah, I agree with Fnord. When you ask her a direct question, it puts her on the spot. When she's in an argument, it's more natural.
