Are voices from the same gender annoying?
I think higher-pitched voices tend to be more annoying because they are piercing to the ears. Naturally more female voices are like that. Often in public places, people who are talking/laughing loudly and annoyingly are women/girls because their voices tend to be higher-pitched and can be heard more distinctly. Children's voices are the same, too. I do find some men's voices annoying, mostly when they are rather rough kinds and laughing loudly in a rather vulgar-sounding way.

I don't know if I can say they ANNOY me, but yeah...I'd rather hear men's voices over female voices any day. I even recognize them easier. I recognize various actors doing voice-overs in cartoons and TV commercials all the time -- Gene Hackman voices Lowe's commercials, Tim Allen does Campbell's, Patrick Stewart does a car rental company (National I think). I almost never recognize the female voices -- Julia Roberts is the only one I can place right now, and I can't think of the product.
There are of course some women's voices that are OK --low and soothing over screechy and whiny. But I can't stand the sound of a bunch of women together trying to talk over each other! It sounds like a chicken coop to me -- a bunch of cackling that I can't make any sense of. I have a lower voice myself, as do most of my female friends.
On the other hand, I can sit and listen to a group of men talk all day -- not what they're saying but how they say it. The low rumble of the male voice (yes, I know that some men are squeeky and whiny too) just does something to my psyche -- I get all warm and fuzzy inside. And I guess that is how it should be. I figure that women are hard-wired to be attracted to the male voice, and men women's voices.
Yes, male here who would rather eat glass, than listen to his voice or any sort of overblown vocal machismo. I wonder if this could be related at all to the trend some people refer to of some Aspies not feeling their own gender identity as strongly?
A lady i work with likes hard rock and likes the 'emo' trend.
But i dont care much for these modern grunge guys getting hystrionic, but I love the raw emotional stylings of Teddy Pendergrass, Issac Hayes, Otis Redding, and BB King in classic soul( and white guys influenced by soul like Micheal Clayton Thomas from Blood Sweat and Tears). Those male singers did it right somehow.
Though the greatest soul singer was Aretha IMHO.
In my mind's ear Im hearing Teddy Pendergrass singing "Love TKO" and what Im observing is that it does not sound forced. The raw emotion just flows naturally- or sounds like it does. Thats a main difference between him and alot this modern pop in which the singer (boy or girl) is screaming at you.
Apart from certain dialects/accents and shrill voices, there is only one person whose voice I dislike. There is this one female journalist in the local news whose voice for some reason has annoyed me since the first time I heard it.

A friend of my mother's has the smoker's rasp you mention. Her voice sounds hoarse and scratchy and like she's speaking in several different octaves at once.It kinda sounds like if someone blew into a harmonica at a certain place and then just blew there without stopping or changing notes for minutes at a time. She's a very nice lady, but I can't stay to listen to her talk for more than a couple of minutes. It drives me nuts. It always makes me want to clear my throat whenever I'm around her.
