Why do some people find the word "autistic" offens

It could be a LOT worse. In Danish we have this word called "Autist" which you don't have anything similar to in English. It's like schizophrenic. You are A schizoprenic. You are AN autist (which is really not a very nice word in Danish). Most people in Denmark they might not even now what AS or HFA is and hardly ever uses the words for autistic or autism. Autist every time. I even had a friend who's little brother was on the autistic spectrum and she described him as an autist, and I asked what he had, and she answered Aspergers. I've even had people ask me if I was "an autist or something" which really makes me upset for some reason! I know they are kind of right, but the Danish stereotypical of an autist is: Little boy who throws tantrums all the freaking time and has killer memories. Sigh. I would love if NTs called us autistic or that we have autism instead. That would be an improvement.

Most people are smart enough to not try to make me PC because I will make you seem like a hypocritical a**. But people who generally do what the OP typed generally have good intentions.

Apparently 'autistic' is the new 'ret*d' that's all I can think of. ._.

I used to get offended by the term 'aspie' but now I like it.
