How are you with vacuum cleaners?
I can definitely understand how they could be a major annoyance to many people. What grinds my gears is walking to close to one of those gas-powered leaf blowers. Deafening.
I feel exactly the same.
I like the fact that the vacuum cleaner cleans the room. I don't like the noise and the smell. The noise is very distressing. At work sometimes the cleaner happens to start vacuuming where I'm working. I just go away and wait for it to be done. When I vacuum at home (haven't done it for a few years now), I have to gargle afterwards to clean my throat and mouth.
And yes, those leaf-blowers are far worse. Their noise is so distressing.
Not only do I hate the sound of them, as it brings fear to my body, and I'm left shaking and stimming like crazy in order to not melt down for hours afterwards, but I hate it when I see my mum do it, or making me help her move the wires. She just goes right over the wires and I cringe watching, and she vacuums under the wires I've picked up even before I've got a proper grip, and I have to get into a small space under my desk to do that, and then the vacuum comes into that space and I feel terrified and trapped. And my mum's never understood that. I do like it if my room has been vacuumed while I've been out. Why? It has such a nice smell to it, and it's warm, so I like laying on the carpet for a bit. But what's even better is if it's one of those carpet cleaners that make the carpet wet. That's only happened once, but heck, it was nice laying on the carpet while it was wet, since it was wet for days, and knowing it's all clean ![]()

Actually, I was always fascinated by vacuum cleaners, and for a time, I'd buy them at garage sales and fix them up. I was never bothered by the noise when I was vacuuming, but if someone else is, it's annoying. I leave when the maid comes, so as not to have to listen to the vacuum, and hear all the bumping and clinking of things as she cleans the house.

Duh! They'd work poorly otherwise

The only thing I don't like about vacuum cleaners is the loud noise they make. When I'm watching something on TV and the vacuum cleaner is being used, I usually turn the volume on the TV up so I can hear it better. I don't mind the use of vacuum cleaners, otherwise.

They don't bother me at all but what does bother me is this. When I was about 20 I was living back at home with my mother and working an evening shift at my job and then going out with friends. I would stay out until 3 or 4 and then sleep until noon or so, when I would get up and shower and go to work. This worked out well during the week when my mother would get up and go to work early in the morning, but on the weekends she couldn't stand it that I slept past 9. She has always hated it when I sleep and will do little passive aggressive things to wake me up. Every Saturday morning she used to vacuum and she would vacuum the upstairs hall where my room was. Not only did she vacuum right outside my door while knowing I was still inside there sleeping, she would actually hit it up against the door over and over and over until I woke up. That went on for a while, even after I talked to her about it. She pretended that she didn't know what I was talking about and that I was making it up. Finally, one Saturday morning I was fed up. It was about 8 in the morning and WHAM WHAM WHAM up against my door with the vacuum. I jumped up out of bed, flung open the door and snatched it from her and said "You do this one more Goddamn time and the next time you come home from work ain't gonna be no vacuum cleaner in this house!" and slammed it back. Of course I was too mad to go back to sleep, so I got up and dressed and went to a friends house until work, but that put a stop to the early morning vacuuming. After that she would just come in my room and pretend to look for the cats. The cats were never in my room, I didn't allow them in because they peed on stuff. She knew that.
But that's the only bad vacuum feelings I have. We don't have carpet now and I would honestly much rather vacuum than sweep and mop. It's quick and it looks better immediately and the clean seems to last longer. The only reason we don't have carpet anymore is because of the dogs.
I just remembered a funny vacuum story though. When I was 20 I worked as a cashier at a convenience store/gas station. This is the job I'm talking about in the above story. We had one of those car vacuums that run on quarters and people would come up and clean out their cars and vacuum them. One day this teenage guy who was using it stopped and ran in the store frantically. He asked if it was possible to open them up. I said of course, how else would we empty them and he asked for the key. I asked why. He said it sucked up his wallet. No it didn't, a wallet wouldn't fit. I told him that. He said "Just give me the damn key!" I said "No, but I'll go out there and open it for you." I did and then just stood there. He wanted me to leave while he looked through the bag but I didn't, I was curious. He got mad but started searching anyway. Soon he found what he was looking for and was over the moon. He pulled it out and held it up and grinned. It was a quarter of weed and the bag was still rolled up, so it hadn't gone all over the place into the dirt. That was pretty funny.

Good story
The other one, too, because I have an annoying old hag for a mother and I know those little BS games they like to play.
Anyhoo, I don't mind the sound of a vacuum cleaner if I'm the one operating it because then it's like white noise to me. If someone else is running one it can become annoying rather quickly. Same for lawn mowers.

Like most things that make noise if I am the one doing it it's not a problem ,However is someone else is doing it it winds me up no end. The main problem is . Because I have such a problem dealing with other peoples noise I transfer this on to other people. This makes it almost imposable for me to do things that make a lot of noise for fear of upsetting people around me and I tend to upset people all the time while trying to to the what I think is the right thing anyway . For example:- You constantly hear about the environment and carbon offsetting, So I researched everything I could on the matter. After Finding out everything I could I thought the logic action was to plant trees and large shrubs . I thought this would also help to screen off the garden and should stop next door from shouting and giving the finger to my daughter .They would constantly accuse her of staring in to there house. I tried to explain the problems my children have and that they may appear to be staring but they are not actually looking at anything they are usually in there own head . The only response I have ever got on doing this is a lode of abuse and offensive language and that there is nothing wrong with my kids I am just a bad parent. However it seems to be perfectly fine for them to give my kids the finger and when their kids do the same to think it is funny. I just don't understand people one bit .
Anyway I seem to be rambling on again . The point being that after the trees all grew I have had nothing but aggravation about my garden being over grown and blocking out peoples light . The light thing never even occurred to me as my eyes have always been so sensitive to light that I am gratefully for any shade I can get.
So all this leads me to try and be as quiet as I can . This dose however not seem to bother the same bloke I was taking about from using a huge petrol lawn mower at 8 on a Sunday morning even though I have told him of my sleep problems and that I have usually only just got to sleep an hour or two before if that.
My wife has a real problem with vacuums . I have tried for years to get her one that she is not scared to death of . I finally found a rechargeable one by AEG ,not only is it quieter but also has an LED light on the front so she can use it without putting the light on and burning out my retinas so I got her two . The only problem is they don't seem to pick up anything bigger than a microbe ( at least that's how it feels ) so every once in a while I have to get out the shop vac and she disapears for a bit till it's done
Years ago when I worked for a company in the Houston area, I found a bag of what had to be marijuana on the floor when I returned from lunch one afternoon. I picked it up and tossed it in the trash. I kept an eye out the rest of the day for someone looking around for it but never saw anything.
