Sophist,

Was that the BILLED rate, or the final rate the insurance had to pay?

One thing I noticed is that doctors charge about twice what they expect the insurance to pay. If the insurance pays, they write the other half off.

I paid out of pocket, in full, up front. It was at an autism center and I don't believe they accepted insurance. And come to think of it, at that time I don't think I had any insurance.

I have a diagnosis, so I am lucky I don't have to pay out the amount some people in Ireland are expected to pay. Some of these people have been put on waiting lists that exceed 1 year and the health board say how crucial it is to get early intervention, talk about contradicting themselves. I have been reading on my Irish forum (which is not great) that a diagnosis will cost some parents 1500 euros to be seen within three months and less money if put on a long waiting list.

What are your views on this? How much did your diagnosis cost?

damn I year??

DerekD_Goldfish,

In most socialized countries, they base it on return, immediacy, need, and age group, in that order. SO, a young CAPABLE person needing a heart might get preference over a less capable person. One needing it NOW might get preference over one that can live a few years, a heart operation may occur before a face lift, and a young kid might get help before someone 40+.

I don't know how old you are but if you were say 8, and having trouble in school, and you and I were competing for funds, YOU would probably win out because you would benefit, and the government could possibly expect returns. With ME, they figure it won't help and would probably have me waiting.

So time, as well as money, for others doesn't mean too much.

I have coverage for mental health care, so I imagine it would cost about $1500 out of pocket?

It was in early 2004, when I was 30-wasn't looking for a dx, but I got one. Appt. was free, because I was (recently divorced & suddenly way poor) on Medicaid. Psychiatrist suggested it was AS, his peers at clinic agreed-I'd never heard of anything other than (stereotype of "low-functioning") autism. Had seen counselors off & on throughout my life, still do now but it's a positive thing for me (lucky to have good team of professionals-they do exist).

WELL PREPARED, you wouldn't think it would take more than 3-4 hours to diagnose AS. An IQ test, questions on ASD, questions on developmental history.... YET, I DID have a bunch of tests once for problems that NOW would scream AS, but then autism was out of the question. He gave me an IQ test, a number of related things, rorschach test, etc... Something tells me it was about 6 hours, and they wanted to see me AGAIN! I KNOW it was a long time, and I think I went in like 8, and left at like 2. Someone here said something that sounded similar to something I had to do. As I recall they gave me a bunch of pictures, and I had to arrange them and tell a story about it.

Some here make it sound like they had similar problems. I wish they knew about AS THEN. 8-( I could see SO many turning points where I opted for the harder road, hoping to "improve".

I don't know how much it cost exactly because insurance paid for almost all of it. I think my co-pay was $30 and the dr charged a few hundred, I'm thinking around $450. Sorry I just didn't pay any mind to what the insurance was charged. I have a different insurance plan now so I can't view the old insurances charges from two years ago when I was diagnosed.

Mine was $425 US Dollars and was paid out of pocket. They did take insurance, just not mine, but this specialist specialized in adult diagnoses. The process was about 3 hours long with several E-MAILs and phone conversations afterwards. The specialist said that she always waits a month before she does the final decision and write-up. I've been told verbally and I suppose to get the official write-up in the next 3 weeks.

We recently visited the John Hopkins University Hospital for Autism. We were lucky enough to meet with the head of the department and she performed our evaulation with the help of a couple of interns. The testing took more than 6 hours, my son was exhausted. They didn't even get to finish all of the intellegent tests, but the test we did get revealed some details that will help us design his education needs. The total cost was about $1700 USD.
