I've used it a lot here. I like it. Yeah, it IS a cute name, but what is wrong with that?

Because it is demeaning and patronising.
How do you view it as demeaning? I guess that kind of bleeds into my next question...

I'm not denying that there are positive things about AS.
Just that there is a difference between being a person with AS and being an 'Aspie'.
What do you view as the difference?
There will ALWAYS be a condescening attitude, at least with many for the forseeable future. People don't even know I have AS, and seem to act condescending. Sometimes I have to laugh. One moment, people seem to act like they don't know if I can handle something(when I first get on the contract), and within the hour coworkers are giving me THEIR work because I do it so well. If I had meltdowns, or flapped, etc... maybe they would treat me with more disdain. Still, even the fact that I am different gives them pause.
SO, I'm trying to see if some of my base talents could appear more savant like. Maybe I can show enough talent to give them pause for ANOTHER reason.
The best way to get the stigma to go away is to help build your own reputation. If everyone does that, maybe the overall stigma will morph into a badge deserving respect! After all, THAT is why people look to dan akroyd, steve spielberg, albert einstein, and bill gates, and say THEY have AS!
