Were you trying to get hypnotized (as in willing to be and not a strong amount of skepticism)? If that is true the other probable reason it didn't work would be if you were too guarded, didn't want to let the other person give you suggestions as to what you should do. Could also be the flip side, you didn't feel that the hypnotist was trustworthy in your opinion so you were unwilling (subconsciously) to let them hypnotize you.

there are many folk who are not amenable to hypnosis. I was told by a shrink that I would need sodium thiopental to succeed at it, due to my inability to be relaxed yet alert.

What are you trying to imply?

That a Ouija-Graph operator would pounce on those feelings and find something to use against you.
