Oh, wow, there are a lot of really cool people on that list.
One of these days, there are going to be more. Princess BeeBee, author of fiction for and about people on the autism spectrum. Saint Alan, Cattrina the Martyr, and Our Lady of Uncommon Sense, who successfully raised an Aspie child who did not become a Dark Aspie, and did it without a guidebook or an expert or really any help at all.
Are there Dark Aspies?? Goodness gracious, of COURSE there are.
Aspies who grew up without a moral compass, or with a badly distorted moral compass, who happily turned into hideous people. See Adolf Hitler-- now, I'm really not into the posthumous diagnosis routine, but I do find it plausible.
Aspies who grew up trying and failing and getting kicked, and trying and failing and getting kicked, and trying and failing and getting kicked-- and finally just SNAPPED. It's the getting kicked, and kicked, and kicked that is the factor that pushes them over to The Dark Side, though-- not the Asperger's.
Aspies who lived their lives being overpathologized, and mis-treated (like, medically and therapeutically) and told it was all necessary to keep them from becoming psychopaths-- which, if you want my personal view, is probably what happened with Adam Lanza.
We could wax philosophical and say that Broken Neurotypical Syndrome can take an Aspie and make of him or her a monster...
...and I think that's a pretty good theory, because I watched it happen to me. Over two years later, I'm still fighting that battle. I'm still an Aspie-- always will be. The difference, now, is that I've almost put Broken Neurotypical Syndrome behind me and I'm winning the fight. The sun is shining, dammit.
And that's what it comes down to, in the end. There is Autism Spectrum Disorder. There are terrible circumstances and unfortunate convergences of perfect storms. In the end, what stands between every single one of us mere human beings and The Dark Side is the choices we make when we're standing at the border looking left and right.
If that doesn't scare you-- and empower you to make the right choice yourself-- well, I'll always think it should.
I've come back from the edge of the dark twice. If I can do it, anyone can.
