I think both of my parents accept and understand that I have the condition. However, they have displayed ignorance about it in the past. My mum in particular has tried to 'explain' aspects of my personality through Asperger's Syndrome, as if AS can account for everything about my being. She'll sometimes said that key parts of my behaviour and personality are a part of having AS; even if they aren't even tangibly related to the core diagnostic symptoms and traits of the condition. It honestly pisses me off because it feels like she's reducing me down to a syndrome. I'll accede that Autism Spectrum Disorders affect people on a pervasive level and that it can explain/influence a lot of my characteristics and traits throughout life, but there's more to my personality and personhood than AS alone. As the saying goes "No two autistic people are the same."
As for my dad, he seems to have accepted it too. He even went on to say that I could have inherited from him due to its genetic basis and how own behavioural traits, despite having never being formally diagnosed himself. He said this immediately after hearing that I was diagnosed with it but recanted after he began researching it. I still don't know why. I've never asked him about it because I'm not really close to him or his side of the family.
Well, they accept it. But kind of try to force it out me. They know I have trouble with eye contact, still forcing me to look at them etc. Because they think that's how I will learn it. Or just messing up my whole room, because I have a spot for everything. Even for papers I don't need anymore, and that's not the trashcan
.
My dad read some article about autism and now he thinks he knows everything about it. When we're walking in the city he says, see that man? He also is autistic, he is just as a ret*d as you are.
Jus the fact that he thinks he knows everything about it pisses me off. And of course that they try to force it out of me.
