What you describe as alive and fluid, is nothing else then your opposite reacting to fine nuances of your languages, your tone, your face-body-eye mimic, ...Things that can be, if programmed, as well catched by cameras and voice sensors, and so lead the AI to adjust its behavior to it, if it is programmed to do so.
Humans dont do it any other way. We have senors, as our ears, eyes, ... that we use for gathering informations. And then according to these informations, we react to them and decide our behaviors.

Possibilities to choose from: Offering shelter, asking about the causes, be uninterested, ...
We are no fairytales being, that magically decide to interact with each others, but are very phsical beings, that gather informations with our sensors, compare those with made experiences that we physically store in our brain and decide our followings behavior according to that. Its nothing else then a very complex social program. Now we can enhighten our selves again and do again prophecies about "But no...this and that of us is sooooooo great, that it cant be copied." but because of that being now so often proven wrong, we can as well choose to relie on experiences and knowledge and except, that our social program is very complex, but that the science of AI has as well developed that much, that it becomes more and more capable of complex processes as well.
