so I wonder if the old saying, "step on a crack and break my mother's back" is based on this kinda thing?

I do not have any superstitious beliefs.

I also have some weird superstitions/magical thinking. As others have said it IS normal to have superstitions to a certain extent but I personally have been diagnosed with OCD as well as ASD.

Here's a paragraph that I wrote about my superstitions, copied and pasted from another forum:

My weird superstitions which I've been told are related to OCD: That 4 and 5 are bad luck numbers and 6 and 7 are good, when breathing in or turning on a light or opening a door I should think a good thought (something I want to happen) and when breathing out I should think a neutral thought. Also, there are certain articles of clothing that are "bad luck" which I avoid and certain colours of things I avoid like not wearing pink socks or underwear and not writing with a red pen. I know these are completely irrational but I still adhere to them. *The "bad thing" I worry will happen is that I or my mum will get some kind of fatal disease.

When I was really young I used to think people in cars would deliberately try to run me over if I didn't hold my mother's hand when crossing streets or parking lots. All the emphasis on crossing with a grown-up on Sesame Street and other kiddie shows didn't help. I also once read in some book that if I dream about eating bananas it means I will become sick. This actually made me feel very anxious and worried because I had dreamed about it and a few days later I really did get sick. But it doesn't bother me much now. You'd think a dream like that would have a much more Fruedian meaning, which it does. But I think everyone's parents would have died a long time ago since our socks are supposed to look the same. How come it's only if you wear them that way? :) Actually, I'm one of the least superstitious people on earth and will calmly walk under ladders, go out on Friday 13th, and lovingly pet black cats. On the other hand, I'm a little uneasy about opening my umbrella indoors.

I have a weird thing about even numbers being safe and odd numbers are not safe. If the message # is not an even number then oh no.

My first baby already broke my back during the birthing. I guess my kids can step on any cracks they want now. :)

I've heard loads of stuff from various people like these, I'd think that almost makes OP an NT. :D Most are not true of course. Everyone's going to die some time. I'm a bit desensitized now after my dad's battle with cancer for 6 years and my 95 y.o. grandma's being completely crazy. Car crash might be a much better option compared to some other ways.

When I was a kid I believed that if I walked all the way in a room at night without turning the light on I'd get cancer. It was okay to just look in a room or even walk in with one hand holding onto the door frame but if I wanted to go right in the light had to be on. That's the only one I can think of. I still avoid cracks in pavement from time to time or if I do step on them it has to be in the centre of the sole of my shoe going sideways. I also project lines out of objects on the path like rectangular electricity grid manholes or metal grills/storm drains etc.

Guys, stop throwing diagnoses at the OP. Superstition is common to human beings in general. It's why baseball players wear their never-washed horribly grungy lucky socks. If lucky socks are a thing, why not unmatched socks? "I know it's illogical but I refuse to risk it" is classic superstitious reasoning.

I wasn't implying anything, it's just I have to wear my clothes in rainbow order. I have OCD, so if I don't, I can't focus at all and it puts me on risk for a meltdown.

I have silly superstitions too, but I wouldn't call it magical thinking, because I don't really believe in them.
It's just that once a superstition gets into my head, it becomes a compulsion, and I have to go along with it or else all is not right with the universe. so yeah, I would say it's OCD.

I have been told numerous times that this can not be true, but I refuse to risk it.
This was originally categorized as OCD, but that diagnoses has been trashed for quite some time.

Does anyone else have beliefs like this?
Please share if you do and why.

Thank you.

Most people in Western Civilization (if not in the whole world) habitually wear matching socks. So what magic force stops everyone else's parents from dying in car crashes? And why does that force not apply to you? Billions are NOT dying from their progeny wearing matching socks everyday! How come?

Next question: how did you manage to get to your age without ever wearing matching socks? Does your mother dress you funny in other ways? If she does- you OUGHTA grease her!

other than being in the army [who made me wear matched uniform socks] I have often defaulted into unmatched sock wearing mode. but [outside of the army] I've had more than my share of accidents, so maybe on some level there is a linkage?

Oh, I cannot wear mismatched socks!
A different texture on each foot, or shoes not fitting equally because one sock is thicker, I don't like that, but if they are a different color and all else is equal, then that is alright.

my whole body seems to be mismatched [one leg longer than the other, etc.] so I have worn mismatched shoes before and not found it too much more disturbing.

My mother doesn't like me. She never cared, so she just never checked.

My socks don't match... they've all worn holes in different places.
