It's different. In this case the "amputee" never had a leg, but spent his whole life wondering why he couldn't walk like everyone else, then one day a doctor told him the reason he couldn't was not because he was clumsy or slow, but because he was missing a leg. That is reason for congratulations.

Well, there are a lot of positive traits of AS as well as negative ones. Didn't you know?

When NT parents of autistic children receive the news that their child has been diagnosed with autism, they usually react by weeping in sorrow, as though the diagnosis is some terrible tragedy. I was merely commenting on the fact that the people above me on this thread did not respond like that. Instead, they responded by saying "congratulations" and I liked that, because it reminded me what a different environment this forum is to the NT world. Most NT people would have reacted to the OP's announcement by saying awkwardly or sadly: "oh dear. I'm sorry to hear that."
