Is autism considered a mental illness?

No either developmental disability, neurological condition...suppose it could be considered a mental disorder since it effects how the brain works.

It's different from mental illness. Autism is one of the neurological disorders that fit within the autism spectrum disorders, such as Asperger's while mental illness encompasses a variety of mental health issues, such as depression, eating disorders and so on.
