I have always been anti-med. But...I have high blood pressure. And after being put on blood pressure medicine, my blood pressure dropped a little. But not enough. After discussion with my doctor (and noting headaches I was frequently getting), we agreed to try anxiety medicine to "take the edge off." That brought my blood pressure into normal range. And I feel better in situations where I was experiencing anxiety.

Had to take anti-anxiety drugs (sedatives/benzos) twice in my life when my anxiety got right out of hand. They were a godsend.

Helped me tons with the anxiety and spontaneous speech.

Escitalopram and Bupropion changed my life.

Now all three neurotransmitters are increased in my brain. Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Seritonin. Makes me relaxed and focused. I feel normal.

Zoloft and Xanax. My mind wanders more, but it's a trade-off with chronic anxiety otherwise. Kava is good in a pinch.

I am on anti-anxiety tablets (beta-blockers) and would say that they seem to help me a little. I don't notice huge side-effects and they just take the ever-present underlying low-level panic down a notch or two so that I can just get on with things a bit better.

I'm also prescribed tamazapan to help with sleep but this is only used every now and again as it's habbit-forming if taken over long periods.

Hope that helps.

How in effin' Crikey did you get your GP to prescribe you tamazepam? I've been begging them for help with insomnia for years!

Best they've done is zopiclone, which doesn't touch the sides. This is one of the main reasons I self-medicate with marijuana. Cheers NHS

Effexor has been instrumental in me getting my life on track. I can work study play enjoy life pursue ALL my special interests and so on and so forth.

The nasty discontinuation syndrome that people seem to suffer hasn't seemed to affect me at all to be honest. I feel a little twitchy/anxiety ridden if I miss a dose but nothing major. It has only been 1 month and 2 weeks or so but one would expect it to present itself within that timeframe.

Basically effexor has taken me back to around 10-15 years ago before the trajectory of my life derailed. Back then I had a sense of childlike awe at the world. That started to peter out at 14.

Prozac was the anti-depressant that finally started working for me with any noticeable results. At first I was on a small dose of (I think) 20-something mgs (it was a small, white oval pill, that's all I remember) which helped me because it kept me calmer and helped me sleep a lot better. My psychiatrist was happy that I reported positive change with the "white" Prozac and decided to prescribe 40 mgs instead (bigger, blue pills). I still felt calmer and better emotionally regulated, but I didn't enjoy the same peaceful sleep as I did on the "white" Prozac. I started taking the "blue" Prozac in the morning instead and that helped me sleep better.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)
