Sorry but I really dislike your comments about Americans, and I disagree. What you said is true for many people in many countries, not specifically Americans, but I don't want to do the same thing you did so I will not name other countries, but I could because there is countries where the general population is very loud, much louder than the average American (and you shouldn't generalise like that, there is different type of people in every country, some are loud and some aren't). There is always people who think they know everything, even if they have only read about it once in the newspaper. There is always people who think their country is better than all the other ones. And so on. In some countries you couldn't even talk about Autism at all, the awareness is Zero, they don't even recognise that it exists.

Like I said earlier, by my own observation I can say all these things. I never said that I went to another country. I said that I have talked with people from other countries over the phone and that they seemed to be more aware and less arrogant than most of the Americans that I meet. And I still think that a majority of people in America are bigoted, obnoxious a**holes.

I'm very sorry that you would think so badly of us. Just remember that when there is a few loud people somewhere you will mostly hear and see these people, you might not even notice all the other people, who are just as American (or any other nationality) as the 2 loud (and/or bigoted, and/or obnoxious, etc) ones, who are not like that at all. I think you were just not lucky, I have lived in both Canada and the U.S. for many years, and I didn't see this at all, there is nice people and jerks in both countries, and different types of personality, some are loud and some aren't. I have also met people from other countries, and I assure you that I have met some who were really loud and the "know-it-all" type of people, telling everyone else what to do and how to do it. I can also think of one country in particular where it seemed all the men were rude a**holes (especially towards women), but again I will not tell you the nationality, but I was prejudiced against that country for a while because of that.

Generalisations are never a good thing, it leads to prejudice.

P.S. If I'm not mistaken Alex, the owner of WrongPlanet is also American.

Times like this make me not exactly all that "proud to be an American." It's not just this that Americans are ill informed about, no one really knows what's going on in the world at large. My mom went on an exchange trip to Argentina during high school. When she was flying back to the states she felt like she was flying over a brick wall, because in Argentina people actually knew what was happening in the world.

It's like 1984

I keep meaning to read that. It sounds like a really interesting, though perhaps a little ominous, book.

(actually, my mom was in Argentina in 1976 if I remember correctly  )

And this is why I want to leave so badly. I'm ashamed of our hubris. When I lived in England I could always recognize a Yank a mile away, because they were very loud and acted like they owned the place.

I was born and raised for five years in England before moving to the US. I've always wished I still lived there, for a whole host of reasons, not least of which include: nationalized health care, disinterest in starting conversations with random strangers for the hell of it, awesome food, and, as you said, less of a tendency to be loud, brash, and aggressively opinionated, placing too high a value on individualistic ideas. Disney movies indeed.

I'm not sure you would get very different results here in New Zealand, though it saddens me greatly to say so.

Well keep telling me stuff I already know will you? For years, I've known how stupid the majority of people are. It angers me when they also have strong opinions but simply depresses me when they are friendly and naive. For some reason, I can't help reading the yahoo news comments every now and then, to confirm this.

Yahoo comment sections make me lose hope for humanity.
