Dear bumble and structrix - this question comes up on the forum fairly regularly, and I have posted my views several times, possibly to the extent that I am in danger of becoming boring!

The fact is that Autism, as well as its many derivatives, is no more than a theory or an idea - there are lots of 'symptoms' and there are lots of commonalities, but there is no proof of anything - the diagnostic criteria are frequently altered and updated.

Your faith in the infallibility of a white-coated professional is no more meaningful than your faith in your pre-existing self-diagnosis.

I wish you well, and I hope that real understanding will one day be achieved.

Oh I understand, respect and even agree with your opinon, but at this stage in my life I am presently unable to work. Unfortunately, I have to live in this society and this society insists on diagnosing and labelling everything. Until I am able to work and can support myself, I need any support I can get from the government and other official bodies. They seem to require the labels in order to be able to help me with that.

I am close to being able to support myself but not yet close enough that I can go it completely alone.

I received a diagnosis last week after going through lots of tests, but it was told over the phone to my dad. Just waiting for the diagnosis to be written down.

I'm waiting for the result of my very thorough assessment. Should get it in the end of August or the beginning of September. I suspect I'll get a diagnosis but I obviously can't know that for sure. Don't know how I'd handle getting a diagnosis either (I'd probably feel both relieved and anxious/confused/something negative). I keep telling myself I can't be autistic.

I felt a combination of relief and sadness. I also felt a call to action, it's time to start getting the help I need.
