Lying is not in my nature either, luckily I don't need exaggerate my problems to get enough state handouts to get by on. I would rather be working and self sufficient but that is sadly unrealistic for me at this moment in time.

Absolutely not. I have no need to and wouldn't even think of it. There is absolutely no doubt of my need for assistance. If someone has so little disability that they have to lie to get help then they don't need that help at all. If they need help then they won't need to lie, they just need to be honest about the problems they genuinely do have and the impact they have.

The speaker's assertion is utterly ludicrous and someone ought to have called him out on it. Shameful behaviour for a so called professional.

I think I spend most of my time trying to disguise my symptoms.

People who lie about being disabled to claim benefits ought to be put up against a wall and shot. I'm not even joking.

I think they're complete abominations, and I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

The system is ridiculous though. I remember once going to social services to try to get food stamps. I had to leave my job where I was actually making decent money, not a lot but enough to eat, because of the executive function and communication issues and sensory issues I was having. Of course at the time I had no idea that I was on the Spectrum. So I asked social services if I could apply for food stamps until I could get myself together. They told me that to do that I would have to go to remedial job training to learn how to flip burgers at McDonald's. I yelled at the guy and told him that if I was more educated than he was and that I was capable of keeping the job I had, which made a whole lot more than I would have made making minimum wage at McDonald's, I would still be working and not trying to get food stamps. And if I had wanted to work at McDonald's I could have gotten that job without any help from him. Needless to say I did not end up getting any food stamps. If I had been a drug addict I could have gotten on welfare and gotten food stamps.

So people online who whine about not being able to get the help they need because they are not disabled enough are lazy and not trying hard enough? :?

I always believed the system is messed up because they ignore some people who do need help because they look so normal so they fall through the cracks. Not because they didn't need any help and are just lazy and want a cop out. I often feel I am not trying hard enough if I am so mild but yet I still got help and I rely on my parents for support. They will never let me be homeless or end up out in the streets if anything happened. But even normal people need support sometimes too and have to rely on their families.

I wouldn't exaggerate my condition. Not because I think it would be wrong, or I have that whole "autistics don't lie" thing going on (I'm actually a very, very good liar, lol), but because I don't have to. It is that bad.

I never said you or anyone else was lazy - Which is very clear from my post. Please don't project your own bitterness onto me or anyone else.

The thread is talking about people lying (i.e. falsifying their actual needs) to get specialist services and funds that they would be entitled to and would get if they actually needed them. If you need them you can get them all you have to do is be honest when applying - You don't get the services or funding if you don't apply. It doesn't happen automatically or by magic. It comes across as if you haven't even actually applied. If you have and did not get the specific help you believe you ought to then there are courses of action to take to question a wrongful decision and get it reviewed and rectified. If you need services then make sure you get them. There are plenty of disability agencies whose job it is to advocate for people with disabilities if you're unable to do it yourself. What do you think you're in need of and entitled to but not getting? Maybe someone can recommend the correct agencies and channels to go through to get whatever you need in your area.

but if they make it all up, wont the therapy and supports for the diagnosis not be fitting for them? i think the assesment people should get to know the individual, or listen to someone who has atleast spent over a year knowing the person, and perfefibly someone that has contact with the person on a daily basis.
altho there are some therapist out there who think they know you more than anyone else in your life has, and decided to say "boy you like to research dont you?" implying that anything i mention that is bothersome to me and is part of being on the spectrum is "all made up". (fyi im a girl).
and then it leaves a person (me) without the helpful therapy that we need so that we can communicate and express ourselves better, and hopefully be our own advocate).

I would never lie or make up a condition I didn't have. Even if I were in dire straits and needed the money, but was not considered disabled enough to get it, I don't think I could bring myself to exaggerate the severity of my symptoms because I would be too afraid of getting caught. That's the primary reason I follow every rule I encounter to the letter; my mind always severely exaggerates the consequences and scares the crap out of me. My friends wanted to go to the local park after the town's under-age curfew, and I was terrified at the prospect of getting arrested for it, so I went home after five minutes.

You are from New Zealand. It might not be like the USA where undeserving people getting them and deserving people not getting benefits is common.

Actually I have ASD family members in the states and it's even more straightforward there. The Size of the US and the way your system is structured means there are more resources available and more options to access them. You have more developed systems in place to prevent fraud and direct services and funding to those who need them.

Edit to add: Although I'm surprised you recognised where I live - I didn't think anybody here noticed or remembered anything about me, other than generally finding me irritating. Thanks for surprising me!

More like they system is structured so it is very difficult and mind melting to attempt to get benefits your disability entitles you to. It's probably easier for a fraudulant person who knows how to work the system to get it than someone who actually needs it especially if they could afford to pay off doctors or whatever to sign of that they are disabled.

Also with how long it takes it leaves a lot of people with no means of income or any real resources for 2 or more years during the whole process of getting approved, some states have programs to try to help while you are applying...in my state I was getting 175 a month for until I got approved....which obviously is not much to work with.

you're initial question was "Would you exaggerate your condition in order to obtain more state benefits?"

But your post seems to talk about poeple who don't have a "condition" and a opening lieing.

I would exaggerate my condition to gain more, yes. I wouldn't make up a condition.

I'm normal looking and high functioning. Most people wouldn't pick me as having any difficulties. But I do have my challanges, and i do go off the rails, and I do suffer all sorts of pshycological conditions. It's just that I suffer alone.

home and do nothing. I'm going to be nervous and full of anxiety if I go out and do all the things I can do and want to do. I would rather be nervous and full of anxiety actually going out doing the things I can do and want to do. Work can be stressful and it can be a drag. But it is a hell of a lot more fun than staying home and doing nothing and still being nervous and full of anxiety. Besides lying or exagerating causes me way too much cognitive dissonance.

I do like to look at peoples profiles and their first few posts at WP before replying to them to see if I can find out something so I can make a relevant reply. We have a very diverse group with people from different locations here.
