I use my cognition too, not in social matters, but in most other matters.
My cognition does a lot for me in thinking of different ways to approach and solve problems.

One suggestion that I have is that when you find that some conventional way to do something doesn't work for you, then you should ditch it immediately and find your own way instead of trying harder and harder and harder to do it that conventional way while tiring yourself out and still not getting good results.

I find that many things I do are verry merry berry different from how others do them, but I have my way, and they have their way, and my way works for me, and their way works for them.

I have managed to make it to 43 yrs old. I own my own home and work two jobs. Living alone and working most people with Asperger's struggle with. *80% diagnosed are not employed. I refuse to consider myself disabled. I know I have to live on my own because I can not live with anyone. My OCD and my special interest make life very un comfortable for people who have lived with me. Because of this I try really hard to not allow my sensitivity issues and communication problems prevent me from working and living alone. There are days that have challenged me but I made it past them. I'm strong willed, I got that from my AS father. My mother also told me as a child. If you get bucked off that horse you need to get right back on him. If you don't then the horse has won. I will not allow people to make me quit. I use to quit my jobs when people at work were mean to me. One day I decided that I was not running away and quitting anymore.

I grew up around horses on a small farm. I was never treated differently by my family. I was expected to do what all the other kids were expected to do.

Being true to who I am. "If you follow the herd, you end up walking in s**t" is pretty true I think for wrong planeteers.

Yes... same for me. I say that I am boring... but never bored.

I did not know I was on the spectrum until less than a year ago. I was a female growing up in the southern U.S. during the '50s-60s, which means there was a lot of forced socialization that was, mostly, excruciating for me because I was a typical blunt, literal Aspie - which does NOT go over well in the "genteel southern poor" society I was part of.

The fact that I was so uncomfortable (and inept) with socialization made me aware that I needed to improve myself in that arena, so I spent a lot of concerted effort pushing myself out of my comfort zone, researching body language and nonverbal signals, spending entire weekends (on occasion) watching classic movies to figure out how people were "supposed" to behave in public.

I felt no need to intentionally research body language because until last year I had no idea it was a problem. Whatever I picked up was subconsciously. The problems as far as I was concerned was me being "painfully shy", short and uncoordinated and unconfident. All the key traits a ?real man? was and is not supposed to have. I don?t how I feel with my multitasking problems about adding obsessing about body language at this late stage.
