To add a little something to my first post, I think what hurt the most was when my mom put me in an ABA summer camp for three weeks at the age of 14, and would pressure me to use the "skills" they were "teaching" me to become normal; saying things like, "Just going through the motions won't help you," and "I can't make you WANT to change." I never knew what I'd done that was so bad that I NEEDED to change, and she never told me.
