So, actually, no matter how miserable forced eye contact makes you, practiced on a toddler, it just might make their adult life less a story of self-hate, isolation, failure, and misery than, say, our lives are.
What the hell do you know about my life? Speak for yourself; and keep your projections to your own domain of experience.
Thank you! I don't want anyone to add me to their self-loathing.
I also wouldn't be surprised if another study shows that the forced eye contact causes PTSD and mood disorders later in life.
On to the issue of the link between eye contact and aggression, how does it apply to cultures who believe that eye contact is often a sign of disrespect or a challenge?
If a link exists, it's probably because those people who don't make eye contact are being pushed and forcibly coerced into conforming.

Maybe, if people are targeting those who don't like eye contact, then maybe it might be accurate to say that they have become used to people being against them. It isn't irrational or impulsive.
This study is at the very least biased.

I know when I'm forced to make eye contact, especially when I'm already going into sensory overload (during loud arguments,, or anywhere there is a lot of noise or things going on), it can trigger a full on meltdown, so I tend to only force myself to glance up at the eyes of people I really like. It's almost physically painful for me, and I usually can't speak while looking in someone's eyes; I have to look away, think of what I need to say, then look back. It has gotten slightly better over the years, but minimally.
