i was 4 when i was given the "autism" label so i cannot know how i changed personally when i was diagnosed. as for my parents, they denied it for the longest time.

i have an IEP, i can get additional services but many of these i do not believe i need. i do appreciate having an extra 'study hall" like class where i can get homework help and take tests, etc. and i like it (BUT IT'S SOO DAMN CROWDED!)

i really appreciate the help i get but, like 886 said it does not have to define me, and it doesn't. one of the reasons i do not disclose to non-professionals, lest they fall for all the lies and myths out there.

i also have been treated as lesser, half my age.

I was not sure what it was until later in life too. At first a diagnosis would have been harmful as my career was in the military so I didn't go there. But now afterwards will not seek a diagnosis so as to avoid any stigma with people in general. That could change if there was some compelling reason to do so. I have told immediate family. Its not overly pronounced in me, as I got this far without diagnosis/treatment. I did get diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and treat that. There is no treatment for autism itself per-se anyway.
