I guess it was a poor attempt at humor. Actually, it's pretty easy. I see young kids smoking quite often.

Autism link to ASBO youngsters

"More than a third of children given ASBOs have underlying brain disorders such as autism, according to a survey"

I'm sorry, but me and the boy would be butting heads. And I'd spank that kid with the flat of the blade of the big knife he threatens me with. Ya, I believe in spanking. And I think I might look for the "Scared Straight" program. Might work. Might not. ....no come to think...I don't think "Scared Straight" program would work.

Can you tell I'm not a mother?

So... I've asked before, How does this ASBO system work? I realise that ASBO is an acronym for Anti-Social Behaviour Order, however it seems to me to be for Naught if somebody under an ASBO doesn not recieve help/intervention for whatever caused the order to be filed against them in the first place.

ASBOs generally ban people from taking part in particular activity, or banning them from certain areas.
I think they generally are intended to 'protect the public' rather than the perpetrator.

The official government site gives http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/anti-socia ... ur-orders/

They are frequently broken, and in my opinion, don't work.

I have to question the Asperger's DX. From the article:

"“He got in with a group of older lads, all teenagers up to the age of 19 and 20. They were handing him drugs and he was taking anything they gave him, amphetamines, cannabis. Half the time I doubt if he even knew what it was."

Sorry, I just can't see a kid on the autistic spectrum being able to behave with that much sophistication. He sounds more ADHD and needs a neurologist and medication.

In the US, we don't diagnose children with ASPO, but with Conduct Disorder, which is often comorbid with ADHD and implies a certain amount of deceitfulness.

A repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate societal norms or rules are violated, as manifested by the presence of three (or more) of the following criteria in the past 12 months, with at least one criterion present in the past 6 months:
Aggression to people and animals

often bullies, threatens, or intimidates others
often initiates physical fights
has used a weapon that can cause serious physical harm to others (e.g., a bat, brick, broken bottle, knife, gun)
has been physically cruel to people
has been physically cruel to animals
has stolen while confronting a victim (e.g., mugging, purse snatching, extortion, armed robbery)
has forced someone into sexual activity
Destruction of property

has deliberately engaged in fire setting with the intention of causing serious damage
has deliberately destroyed others' property (other than by fire setting)
Deceitfulness or theft

has broken into someone else's house, building, or car
often lies to obtain goods or favors or to avoid obligations (i.e., "cons" others)
has stolen items of nontrivial value without confronting a victim (e.g., shoplifting, but without breaking and entering; forgery)
Serious violations of rules

often stays out at night despite parental prohibitions, beginning before age 13 years
has run away from home overnight at least twice while living in parental or parental surrogate home (or once without returning for a lengthy period)
is often truant from school, beginning before age 13 years
The disturbance in behavior causes clinically significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning.
If the individual is age 18 years or older, criteria are not met for Antisocial Personality Disorder.
Specify type based on age at onset:
Childhood-Onset Type: onset of at least one criterion characteristic of Conduct Disorder prior to age 10 years
Adolescent-Onset Type: absence of any criteria characteristic of Conduct Disorder prior to age 10 years
Specify severity:
Mild: few if any conduct problems in excess of those required to make the diagnosis and conduct problems cause only minor harm to others
Moderate: number of conduct problems and effect on others intermediate between "mild" and "severe"
Severe: many conduct problems in excess of those required to make the diagnosis or conduct problems cause considerable harm to others

An aspie child as a "con man"?? I just don't believe it.

I don't believe that in the United States, that is the current thinking. There appears to be some facts omitted. A survey of whom? How are these diagnoses being made?

Sorry, I was confusing ASBO with ASPO. We don't use the label anti-social for people on the autistic spectrum. That is reserved for budding psychopaths as the little bully in the article.

I would love to see some verification that this child has AS....based on what.If the paper can verify this DX,I think an AS community should sue the paper for slandering the As community with this stereotype....just a dream,I guess.

The kid sounds more like a child I worked with with had fetal alcohol Syndrome and a 70 IQ....no impulse control. This doesnt sound like sensory overload causing tantrums it sounds like a budding sociopath who might be better helped in a more structured environment and the correct medications?

Krex, I think you are on to something there. Here, if he wasn't dx'ed with FAS, it would be Conduct Disorder and he would be in a class for severe behavioral disorders.

However, the general pricnciple of labeling children "anti-social" is disturbing.
