The sensory issues were one of the big reasons I stopped driving (that, and my night vision is dangerously bad). Of course, this just means I listen to hip hop, crying babies, and being sneezed on on the bus and train (SIGH). Sometimes I just have to put up with it to do the things I want--to go places for fun and to go to work. I put on the earplugs, music headphones, dark glasses, whatever it takes. Sensory issues suck, but I don't want to be a prisoner in my own home.
You'd be surprised, though, what a mom can do if she tries to comfort a child, especially a toddler. My mom is the expert--a lot of times she can get them to stop by distracting them with a toy, singing, or talking, especially if it's just an "I'm tired/I'm afraid of strangers" cry.
