I seem to have a perpetually 'confused and lost' expression. Everywhere I go, people have always asked me if I'm lost, if I need help, and they try to explain things to me with gestures, because I seem to not understand words. I think I forget to nod, or react to their instructions, I just keep staring blankly, so they think I didn't understand what they said.

I don't think NTs think we're idiots. I think they think we're weird.

Then explain why NTs called us "Idiots" if they don't think that we are "Idiots".

Some NT trolls have started accounts on this website just to call us "Idiots" (among other things), and generally put is down and insult us.

Of course, they do not last long, but they do show up.

I just don't sense that NTs usually believe we are idiots.

I've been called an idiot because I don't get obvious things, though. By people who don't think I'm autistic--only lazy.

But, most of the time, I don't sense "idiot" is the first thought of most NTs when they encounter an autistic person.

I sense it's more like "odd," "inscrutable," "awkward."

The people who call us idiots call other people idiots, too.

You seem to have a way of denying other people experiences with your "feelings". Did you ever think that maybe it was your feelings that were invalid, and not the facts that other people report?

I feel if anybody calls me an idiot, that the person calling me an idiot has some kind of problem.

Moderator note:
Apart from this post, every poster on this thread has been expressing an opinion - their own opinion (including you Fnord). Facts are elusive in this opinion topic because most of the time we can only guess at other people's thoughts (that's true for NTs too). KK was expressing his opinion; his post is quite reasonable in the thread context, and your response is rather harsh. Feelings and opinions often have a very close relationship, for many people - feelings tend to drive opinions rather than the other way around AFAIK. As this is a moderator note, please don't debate the quote or this advisory (or the thread will have to be locked).

I agree with this. If they think people with autism are idiots (or even call us that in our faces) they are the ones with the problem, as they are apparently incapable of doing research and showing some respect.

Ow and I think the "blank face" comment is more about dissociation. Like when you "space out". You just stare at one spot without actually consciously seeing what you are looking at, you're no longer aware of your environment in general (for instance someone can ask you something but you don't even hear it), don't think anything at all or actually think a LOT at once, and are completely in your own "world". At least I have this :?

Btw I'm new here. I actually found this site through Wikipedia when I was reading autism related articles.

"spacing out" usually only happens to me when my anxiety goes through the roof. I know what you are saying though. It's like horse blinders or tunnel vision. I am not sure if this is an autism thing or anxiety thing though. Check out this link on dissociation and anxiety.
