my birthday is a time for me to reflect on my personal wisdom however at the same time it reminds me that my future is very very uncertain. also I prefer to skip the song and get it all over with.

I completely understand this and can empathise! I get so anxious on my birthday - I don't know how to act when receiving more attention than usual, it makes me feel uncomfortable that it's not a normal day and I feel compelled to do something special for it when really I just want to stay inside. My 21st has just gone and a lot of people asked like 'Ooo what are you doing for your 21st? It's the big one!' And I'm so glad it's over now! I don't know why it's the 'big' one and all I did for it was go for a quiet meal with family and a friend, it feels like you're meant to have some big mad party or something though. Ah well though, nice to see so many others here feel similar about birthdays ![]()

Happy birthday, were the same age. WP has the wrong age.
I used to have a hard time with my birthday but only after my mom left, it makes me sad that I can't see her for my birthday.
But I love my birthday, I love getting gifts, I love the attention.
I find parties to be quite overwhelming and I often shut down but it doesn't stop me from loving.
I hate birthday balloons, balloons make me extremely anxious.
Ever since I was 15 I've been getting Sonic ice cream cakes from Dairy Queen. I'm definitely gonna get one for my 20th birthday too.
Although I don't like aging and never have, if it were up to me, I'd rather stay 2. And I'm anxious about becoming 20.

Birthdays are usually the time people who don't care about me find an excuse to squeeze me(they call it hugging). They really don't care but in my birthday they make an extra effort to pretend they do. I don't like sugary food thus cake isn't my thing.
The singing and clapping are far too loud.
Being the center of attention for no clear reason is emotionally tiring and having to pretend I enjoy physical contact and the group attention makes me seem rude. I don't understand why people have birthday celebrations (I know the concept, not the feeling).
I loved birthdays as a kid because I got cake which I loved and new toys. But one year I had a birthday party and never wanted to do it again. Getting more presents that way wasn't worth it. But thank goodness only half of the girls from my class showed up but it was still overwhelming. Now every time my birthday comes, I am reminded of how old I am getting.

I love birthdays, since I usually celebrate one with my relatives and one on my actual birthday with my mum and close friends. ![]()

I don't celebrate them, it's not like anybody else does. It's just another year older where I feel like a bigger failure and burden, it's embarrassing. Quarter of my way thru life, if that doesn't depress you then I don't know what would. I guess being halfway thru maybe? Maybe I'm halfway, who knows. All that was good about them is getting free stuff and people treating you a little nicer but if you don't get that then it really is an awful day. Guess what day it is?
I'm not one for ceremony or social rituals at all, so I don't go a bundle on birthdays, though there's something there. I don't worry about it when it's my birthday, nobody tries to make a huge fuss, it's all very low-key and dignified, they just give me a few "happy birthday" messages on Facebook and I say thanks, my partner, my sister and my son give me cards, quite nice ones usually, and maybe a present or two, and generally they're things they think I might like rather than token gestures, and it's nice that they think about me. I'm glad I don't have lots of mainstream friends showering me with embarrassing rubbish for the sake of doing "the done thing." But I wouldn't be too much of a butt about it, I'd hate to hurt anybody's feelings. I like it when unusual people do something a bit out of the ordinary, e.g. somebody with a flair for art might make a card for me instead of buying one.
I reciprocate as best I can when it's their turn, sometimes when I'm busy it can awkward, and I can get quite stressed out if I can't find a suitable card - most cards have too much hack-written sentiment or lame jokes, and they make me think the main winners are the card shops - but I can usually find one that's reasonably artistic, or sometimes a joke one that's funny. I haven't got round to making graphic design a special interest yet, but if I ever do, I'll make my own. Really it's not the observation of birthdays as such that I have a problem with, I just hate the tacky commercial waste thing, and the way the personal touch is so often lost, and I don't like fuss or noise. Dad used to say that he'd prefer a quick visit and a handshake any time, he reckoned cards were originally for people who couldn't be with their friends on their birthdays, and that the whole game had got out of hand because of commercial interests.
