The way this man patronizes autistics irritates me, with his references "pet interests" and "little obsessions". It's demeaning, and demonstrates that he sees our interests as nothing more than a "cute" or "annoying" symptom of a disability, rather than a legitimate intellectual and emotional pursuit, which is far deeper and more enriched than any NT could hope for.

I do agree with the distinction between autism and social learning disability/social communication disorder however. A key part of autism is the sensory component, the mental rigidity, the emotional overwhelm and confusion. Without at lesat the majority of those symptoms, a person can't really be considered autistic, so a separate label for those who share our social difficulties, but not our physiological/mental ones, seems appropriate.

I definitely disagree. Your idea could harm many people who are similar to me.

Autism can be just socio-emotional condition and should can have nothing to do with rigid thinking and sensory idiosyncracy. I have rather flexible thinking and my sensory processing is genrally typical. I have odd nonverbal communication and fixative interests. And I am diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder, not a learning disability or communication disorder.

It's autism. The truth doesn't need to be sugarcoated. I can handle the truth.
