I hear lots of blatantly false laughs all the time, usually combined with plenty of equally obvious signs that the person can't be bothered to actually listen much at all to what they're being told. The fake laughter is just one element of their well-supplied repertoire of fully generic replies which require no thinking or comprehension, and which also make you look like the bad guy, or like you're crazy, if you show any signs of discomfort or indignation. I think the blatant fakeness signals to neurotypicals that they just have to put up with it, or else they'll only be asking for trouble, and they accordingly behave as if they couldn't detect it at all.

In a normal situation when my attention is spread too thinly I can pick up on almost nothing. However, if I have my focus on a single person's behavior then I can usually figure out what's going on.

I thought Aspies would be more likely to miss that sort of thing.

I think it might depend on each individual as some will miss what others on the spectrum wont and visa versa but would definitely agree that i think many on the spectrum will likely miss some peoples signals. :)

I miss them because I am focusing on something else.

I recognise a fraud at 200 paces. I have people at work I don't get on with because I know they are as fake as Jordan's boobs.
Truly, it turns my stomach to be in the room with them alone because they make me feel like I want to run away. And when they speak to me I can always hear the putdown. They KNOW I think that I KNOW and that gives them a stinking attitude.

Yes but I don't think we're more likely to be able to detect fakeness, if it is a typical AS trait to miss social things.

But, provided we detect it, we're less likely to realize we're supposed to behave as if we didn't.
