I could relate to that scene I didn't notice him doing anything unusual though. I wish I could watch that part again!

I probably wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't exactly the same thing I do too - I've rarely heard/seen anyone do exactly this movement before.

I think I do something like it, although I don't know what I look like when I do it so I can't be sure. It certainly looked familiar and comprehensible.

Good point. It looks like a similar thing "feels like" to me. I wouldn't know if it looks the same for others. From inside me that's what it looks/feels like.

I dunno, some people just pay less attention to stuff like that? Plus it often happens at the bottom left edge of the screen so it's easy to miss in this case.

I think his portrayal was actually very well done he must be quite talented. Ive seen people with AS with worse traits and (of course) people where it was barely noticeable and I believe he did a good job of falling in the middle somewhere.

Just AS enough to be noticeably hampered by it but not so much as to portray us as completely incapable of having a fairly normal life.

I have the movie on hold (second in line) at the library now, am looking forward to seeing it.

I also have some hand stims as well, snapping, tapping middle digit to thumb etc, so I will look out for the parts mentioned.

I have a dual DX, HFA/AS *shrugs* so I suppose my opinion on those things may be a moot point, but perhaps will stop back despite that.

In any case thanks for the review... I had the book, but returned it because I really never could bring myself to read fiction.

Are you talking about the book, Mozart and the Whale written by jerry and Mary Newport? It wasn't about the movie, it was about them in real life and about their relationship. The book isn't anywhere near the movie but you do notice references in it to the movie like Mary cleaning Jerry's apartment and him getting upset just like Donald, him being a cab driver, Mary getting him the job Donald got, Mary being a hair cutter person, them having lot of pets; birds and rabbits, and of course Jerry holding a autism meeting just like Donald does in the meeting.

Yes that book. I guess I did realize it was a true story about the authors lives, but still I read mostly text books and the like.

But perhaps I will make a second attempt at it, at least commit to the first chapter and see if it holds my interest and I can continue. I truely am interested in the subject and perhaps it will surprise me.

"I didn't leave autism, autism left me". I think autism has become for some the only identity they have, so they try to defend their version of ASD as the most autentic one.

I think it's because most of us have felt invalidated all our lives, plus we see most issues as black & white anyway. So it's hard for us to realize and accept that AS looks different in each individual, and that each aspie also has their own individual temperment, attitudes, experiences, etc not to mention strong points and weak points within their AS itself. Isabelle appeared to be very high-functioning, but she actually had less empathy for others than Josh's character. My husband is completely NT but very shy and anxious, and he related well to Josh's character. So I think the whole issue of "high" versus "low" functioning AS is a very gray area; it seems to depend more on the situation, rather than the person in general.

Before knowing about autism, I thought of myself as an intellectual, even a sophist. Now I am putting all on perspective, and I am a mild case!

Actually, in some scenes she had empathy. Like when she escorted the depressed girl. I also liked how she treated people on equal basis, without being patronizing. I can kinda relate to her longing for true acceptance and respect.

She still has lot more bluntness than an ordinary girl is supposed to have. I plan to show the movie to a female flatmate so she may give me an opinion on the character. I guess people here could do the same. Instead of criticizing the character on her functioning, let's here some NT commenting on her.

I thought both of the main characters were portrayed very well. At first i thought the Josh Hartnett character was i bit exagerated but after thinking about it i think that was because we (the audience) are watching him directly and i would try not to meltdown so obviously when someone was watching me, but there isn't actually anyone there in the film world. (i hope that made sense) I can empathise with both characters to a certain extent because i do act kind of 'quirky' like Isabelle at times but i'm also really bad at making eye-contact and am quite uncoordinated like Donald.

I actually found her slightly patronizing at times, particularly when she was getting in other autistic people's faces.

But I definitely found her realistic.

I wasn't actually criticizing her, just making an observation. She acts pretty much like me, and my NT husband agrees. So I'm not gonna be too hard on her.
