Having been around long enough to see several changes in what the appropriate terms are for whole varieties of the human condition, I think the important part is to be asking the questions about how we label each other. The political correct changes over time and some of them get dropped by the wayside. Humans being what we are, we can intuit insult or praise in almost any word. And popular culture can transform any label into an insult.

I try to stay in the general area of: we are all human beings with inherent value and something to offer....and then go from there.

blazing star:

it might be correct that every human being has "something to offer". but not all offered things have the same retail value. maybe not all offered things have value altogether.

even the value of monetary currency, ie. yen versus francs, fluctuates.

thus, it appears hard to imagine, that every human being has an equal value.

the other thing is that, what if every human being has a value? how do you measure value? not by earned income, because some employees get paid too much or too little. there is no objective, absolute method of measuring value.

besides, maybe someone's "inherent" value, is not high enough to justify the problems that they cause.

some former precious lil "friends" had some things to offer, positively. however, after all the trouble they put me through, it seemed that they were not worth the cost benefit analysis.

it seems in this hellworld, that "value" is strictly relative. the people I value to pieces, unfortunately the rest of the world does not value so much. and vice-versa.

I find value in many different places. I realize that in the USA everything gets reduced to monetary value. There are others. I see part of my role in life as looking for the value/good in everyone I meet. (This does not mean Hitler and please don't go there.) It also doesn't mean of personal value to me (or you.) Value in the larger scheme of things, which even leaves open the possibility that I can't see the value. This philosophy has resulted in my life being richer (again, not monetarily) and more fulfilling. I also (hope) it makes life better for others too. I am not always successful, but I believe it is worth the attempt.

There's no such thing as non-personal value. Everything that is valued is valued by someone. That's part of the meaning of the word "value." And the fact that this "philosophy" makes your life better—something that you value—suggests that you are in fact talking about what is valuable to you.

I'll stick with saying I'm neurologically disabled and physically disabled. Or more simply, autistic and crippled.

Maybe a sinister plot from a right-wing, "end the welfare state" think tank.

Get disabled people to convince themselves that they're not really disabled.
