Strange...

I don't have an on going issue with an invasive hum noise in daily life, but the audio in the video sounds familiar to me, yet I can't place it.

Try using headphones , I didn't hear it through my TV speakers but through headphones it's like a UFO landing

Natural Plastic, I live a couple just a couple hours north of you. Skiers use the term banana belt to describe this area. Usually the term is used to describe some of the southern Midwest states but because our ski season is much lamer than like Vermont's the term banana belt gets thrown out there to describe our ski conditions.

Skil, I don't remember when I first heard it. I think I have been hearing for years and only just this year discovered the videos talking about it. I think I really started noticing it when I moved to the town I live in now. At first I thought it was a really big generator but I realized it wasn't because I was hearing it everywhere, locally, not just in my direct town. I have even heard it in the Washington DC suburbs.

But where I live is actually on a faultline. Many people do not realize that this part of the country is a faultline. I looked at several videos about this and some of them think that it could be earth plates shifting. Others think it would be massive waves in the ocean depths. Those things make sense as well since I am not too far from the Atlantic seaboard. It starts suddenly, lasts for several months at least and then stops for a couple of months and then starts again. It sounds like a huge truck, possibly a big diesel engine kind of sound but when I hear it it pulses as well. It is not a smooth sound. Sometimes when it starts up I think it is bass on car stereos but then I go looking for it and can't find the source. It took me a long time to figure out that it was not stereos. I just figured that out a few months ago when I realized that I was hearing it every single place I went 24/7 so it could not possibly be car stereos. I would even hear it in the nature parks. Then I thought I was maybe hearing cars on streets miles away because sometimes I do hear them far away. But the sound never changed no matter where I went or when I went different places. So it can't be car stereos or big trucks or generators. It has to be something really big.

SaveFerris, A UFO landing might definitely sound like that. Some people who hear it have thought it was UFOs or some kind of government mind control thing. I personally doubt it would be one of those. Tectonic plate activity seems like a more likely explanation to me. I was once told by a friend of mine who studies energies that I can actually hear the natural pulse of the earth. That seems more likely to me than government mind control projects or UFOs even though I would not dismiss anything at this point.

I used to hear the hum, but now have tinnitus, so didn't hear anything in that clip.

No I don't hear it, but, I am able to hear it on YouTube. But I don't hear very high sounds, so I guess it only makes sense that I can hear rather low sounds. I did hear a rumble about fifteen minutes ago, but that was caused by a t-shower.

Probably natural. Maybe more than one local phenom causes it.

That school of midshipman fish calling for mates do sound like a slightly high pitched ship's foghorn, and would explain why folks on Scottish islands would hear the hum. But not why folks in Taos New Mexico would hear it.

Rocks underground groaning from the stresses of tectonic movements of the earths plates makes sense.

Skibum apparently spends a lot of time in the skiing mountains of Pennsylvania. That's a geologically similar area to the Highlands, and islands, of Scotland. Lots of very OLD mountains, geriatric but still alive geologically. In fact ..oddly enough...both areas are actually the SAME mountain range. Back in the days of the dinosaurs when there was no Atlantic ocean and Europe and North America were connected the Appalachians and the Scottish Highlands were all the same long mountain chain.

Wow, that makes so much sense. That sounds like the most likely cause. And that would explain why the sound comes and goes if the plates and mountains move and settle and then move and settle again. But I wonder why so few people are able to hear this.

Good question.

The range of human hearing tops at 20,000 cycles a second. The bottom apparently varies between 16 and 32 vibrations a second.

I suppose that there is some variation in how low (and how high pitched) your hearing goes. Took a radio production class in college, and we did an experiment listening to tones. It was hard for me to hear even 17000 hertz.

With this hum the opposite end of the spectrum is the issue. You may be able to hearing slightly lower frequencies than the average person.

Could be other variations. Some folks might be more sensitive than others. Even some folks who can hear it might get "ear blind" to it (their brains just screen it out if it goes on for a long time), and others don't. Just speculating.

I think you are right about that. I have had my ears tested many times and my hearing is much more sensitive than the average person of my age. I deliberately let my ears fill with ear wax just to keep me from being completely overwhelmed to the point of constant meltdowns. I also have very large temporal bones. One time when I had my hearing tested, the guy who did the test said asked me how I was able to stay sane because my temporal bones are large. He said he was amazed that I had not gone completely insane. This is why ear plugs and ear protectors don't always work for me. First of all they are often painful and if I am trying to get relief from low frequency sounds, they just make things worse because they only block higher frequency sounds and the lower frequency sounds sound amplified. So it's very difficult for me to function. And as an Autistic person, there is no ability to tune out a sound or just get used to it or to become ear blind. I do not have the brain function to be able to do that. So it can be torturous just trying to get through every day. I wish that the judges who keep denying me disability would understand. I also suffer from very bad tinnitus and so I never ever have silence. People keep thinking that I can function and work full time jobs and support myself. They have no idea how crippling these kinds of things can be. They don't understand how exhausting it is to have to deal with this literally 24/7 and also have to deal with all the other Autism and Misophonic issues and the physical issues from my physical disability. I think a lot of us are having this trouble with disability judges and people who give services and benefits. They just make decisions about us by how we outwardly appear at a glance.

That's sad....but interesting.

Interesting what that guy said about your temporal bones, and how he was amazed that you "don't go insane"(apparently you almost do do that). Maybe you can get someone like him to testify at a SSI hearing or something.

Anyway...but if my theory is right, I wonder why no one seems to have noticed it in all of human history until the 1970's. Maybe folks always heard it but it just didn't make it into the media until recently.

It's scary what it takes forever for people to notice.

I had tried to get a hold of the guy for him to write a testimony for my hearing the company is not longer there. But I ran into the owner of the company who now does testing for Sam's club. He had made me $150 custom musician ear plugs which did not help me. He gave me an email that another tester had written for me for my hearing stating that when he tested me I actually had a meltdown to some of the frequencies and he was shocked by my response because no one had ever reacted like this in a sound booth with him before. He had to start testing me at a different frequency than he would normally test everyone else. This written testimony was submitted to the judge. She threw it out. She also threw out the seven page letter my psychologist who also diagnosed me and who has been seeing me since my diagnosis in 2014 wrote. To qualify as disabled as an Autistic for disability, you have to meet four of the seven requirements. I meet all seven. My psychologist wrote an entire page for each point to show the severity at which I qualify for each one. Some of them, I am actually very severe. My lawyer also wrote a ten page affidavit. I have letters from people who have known me for thirty years describing my Autism from back then and how much it affected every area of my life. I have photographs of myself as a toddler and as a preteen with the dead pan aspie stare in every single one of them. I have a job history chart of over 45 failed attempts at every kind of job under the sun over a period of 23 years with each one telling in detailed description why I was not able to keep the job and 95% of those jobs ended because of an issue with Autism. And those 23 years include the 12 years I spent just being a housewife and not working so I had over 45 failed job attempts in 11 years. My university records show that I was not able to finish school not because of an inability to be academically very good but because of Autistic issues. We submitted almost an inch worth of paperwork with evidence of how severely my Autism affects me and how it makes me very disabled. But the judge threw all that out. She literally threw out all the evidence and then said that I am not disabled because there is no evidence. Then we appealed and just got the decision from that a couple of weeks ago. They said they were going to stand by her decision and that their decision was considered final.

I found out that another lawyer told my lawyer that in this state, they will do every single thing they can to deny benefits to Aspies even if it means breaking the law to do it which this judge did on multiple accounts. They just don't want to pay out all that money. And the funny thing is that I applied for the Autism waiver. It's a four year waiting list just for an application. But I called because I was afraid that they would consider me too high functioning to qualify for it. But after talking to the girl for just a few minutes, she said that just from our conversation, she felt that I was definitely severe enough to qualify for the waiver and that it was a shame that I have to wait four years for the application because I need the services so much and I don't have any other services or support systems in place. It is first come first serve so people can be ahead of you even if you are more needy. But my lawyer really thought my disability case was going to be won at the hearing level because I fit every single category and some of them very severely. But the judge did not go by the law on that. If she had I would have automatically been approved. But she basically ignored the law to deny me and the appellate court level just supported her.

Yeah, it's really tough. And it's really frustrating. I had a conversation yesterday with the parent of a nonverbal Autistic teen who is visibly disabled. I told her I was also Autistic and that I also have very severe struggles because of that and because of my other two invisible disabilities. But it seemed that no matter what I told her, she could not believe me because I am not obvious like her son. And she could not understand why I should deserve disability benefits or services like her son gets. She actually at first told me that she did not think I should be diagnosed with Autism. It is so difficult to have to convince people of the severities that they don't see unless they know you intimately. Sometimes I just sit and cry because people don't believe that I need help but I need it so badly and trying to survive is such a massive struggle. And the only reason I am not getting the help I need is literally because the judges are throwing out the law specifically to deny us. And there are so many of us in this position. It really feels very hopeless. I got a little job now but I am only grossing about $800 a month and I have to support myself on that with no help at all.

The parent of this Autistic boy saw me at my job, I am working as a lifeguard and swim instructor and he was in an Easter Seals program at the pool. But her attitude was if I can work this little job, I should be able to work enough to support myself financially and I can't possibly be in the same diagnosis as her son. But because of my issues, I cannot physically work enough hours to support myself on a minimum wage job. My body cannot sustain that. I need tons of recovery time. And I don't have qualifications to work jobs that pay because I had to drop out of school because of Autism. My psychologist that if they had known then what they know now, I would have had an IEP and all kinds of help and I would have doctorates by now graduating at the tops of my classes. Unfortunately, I have the water skills to make $100 an hour. I spent decades perfecting my teaching and can teach things that no one else can. I am the only fear of the water specialist in this part of the country. I could very easily support myself doing that and for a time I did very well doing that. But insurance laws have changed. You cannot be a private contractor in aquatics anymore unless you have huge amounts of money to pay the insurances. So I have to settle for minimum wage part time employment when my skills are worth more than ten times my actual pay. But as is the issue with many Autistics, being super specialized and having great expertise in one particular area, does not always mean you will be successful.

It is really sad because I spend a lot of energy trying to advocate for people on every part of the spectrum. I really go out of my way to try to work with the officials in my city and state to make things better for every one on the entire Spectrum even if I am not getting paid to do that. And it really hurts when parents of Autistic kids that I am really fighting for, treat me like I don't deserve services and help that their kids automatically get and tell me that I should not be calling myself Autistic because I appear high functioning in some areas. It hurts so much. But I have to keep doing whatever I can and hopefully my efforts will help our entire community.
