Where did I say that savants are "dumb?"

I don't know if I am on the spectrum or if I just have a few traits. I have not heard the term savant before. I do know my character. I do not have a very good general knowledge. It is actually not that great at all. However, in certain subjects I have great depth and know things that others may not know. I remember when I was in my late teens and I was at the model railway club that I used to attend. While I could not remember word for word, I could remember how much certain things cost off by heart from a certain model railway shop who used to advertize in a certain model railway magazine. I assumed everyone could do this until someone asked the prices of things and I could tell them where to buy them as this shop was cheaper but other shops may have cheapet postage etc. A fellow railway modeller who was in his mid to late 20's was amazed that I knew so much.
These days, as I rarely look a prices because they are out of my reach, and besides... I tend to make my own items to save costs so I am out of touch with current prides.... But I am not too far out if asked about 00 gauge. Other scales and gauges may be more difficult to remember. I have been caught out a bit in recent times in 00 gauge though as prices have shot up the last few years quicker then I have kept up with them.

If that were true, the "mores of society" would not apply to savants----but to "NT's."

Is it the intellectually impaired who are oppressing you. Or is it the moral beliefs of society that are oppressing you?

There is only one way to know for sure.

Personally speaking, I have been considered gifted in many areas. (I don't consider myself gifted, I consider myself easily obsessed over a subject).

Of course one reaches above average levels of proficiency in a subject when studying it day in day out with autistic hyperfocus!

Most of the auties I know are extremely knowledgeable on their special interest. As special interests change over a lifetime, they then become considered 'gifted' on another subject.

So I think most auties can be gifted on different subjects!

Maybe one positive aspect of autism is the hyperfocus and obsession over a special interest. It's a pity not all obsessions have the potential to be capitalized!

This "hyperfocus" could mean the invention of great things.

We probably wouldn't have the World Wide Web if it wasn't for a bunch of people who were hyperfocused on computers and how one computer could communicate with other computers.

There are many other instances when "hyperfocus" led to great things.

There are a variety on the spectrum, so people are going to be talented in different ways.

Some people may be multi-talented, others may have talent in one certain area that they excel in a savant-style way. Maybe assuming comes from the whole special interests things, and people on the spectrum having relatively narrow interest. Again, these things can vary from person to person too but I see the connection between these things.

Though in a sense, it does ring true for me to an extent. I am talented with art, taking in large amounts of information about topics that interest me, working with animals and film editing. These are multiple areas but outside of these areas, there is a lot that doesn't come naturally. I get the hang of some other things I put my mind to.

As we love to say, "if you've met one autistic, you've met one autistic." That's the beauty of ASD, we're all so different and unique. Some of us are only especially talented in one area, some of us have multiple talents, and some of us don't have any but are still quite intelligent overall. I like to think I'm a decent singer and drummer, and especially good at anything related to maps, but there are a lot of things I haven't had much luck with, such as playing guitar (which I really wish I could do considering a lot of the music I listen to is guitar-driven), coding in any language other than Python, and finding a girlfriend.

I wish I was gifted in something. I'm a generalist through and through, and was diagnosed as a child.

A lot of people on the spectrum have dedicated interests in a narrow range of subjects, and can be highly intelligent, so it's common to see someone who's become very good at a particular thing.

I have a broad general knowledge base and read a lot, but I wouldn't consider myself gifted. I am interested in a variety of things and have a good memory for facts. I did a lot of everyday, average things very late in life.

I think everyone has things that they are good at, whether they are autistic or not. some things we need work at, and some things we are already great at.

I think they mean an uneven cognitive profile.

Some autistic people have amazing abilities like an incredible memory.
I have a terrible rote memory and was getting very poor grades at school.

But in high school I scored in the 99th percentile for abstract reasoning.
They had a psychologist come to the school to talk to me because they thought I shouldn't be flunking my classes and I didn't make friends.

It turned out I had an ability for computer programming but when I was in high school there were no computers.
In the eighties I learned computer programming. It came very easy for me and I got a job doing that.
