As if the media had a collective consciousness with the ability to feel emotions?

It doesn't bother you Alex at all that we just have to work that much harder to make people understand we're not all potential murderers and all?

Yes, I think killing someone is deplorable, and I think is the overwhelming sentiment here. But most people don't feel responsible for the actions of a very few number of bad apples. This is an open forum and any one can post here for any reason.

When music fans go to a concert, do they sit and think that maybe one or more of those 20,000 people is a murderer or rapist? Do they feel bad about it? Most do not, and they don't need to.

edited - added something, moved it to new post.

I'm sorry but it bothers me that not only as an Aspie and as a parent of an autistic child that I have to worry about going out there and people making assumptions that my child or whatever could be aggressive and dangerous and all.

You can find killers anywhere on and off the internet. Many people who kill tend to feel disassociated from others around them and upset in aspects of their lives--- that may describe many people here, but it also may describe many teenagers, artists and closet homosexuals, too. Many people kill. I've worked in a correctional facility ( the jail) and have seen quite a few people who have killed other people and they don't seem to be AS--- just the same you can't look at someone with gold teeth and big rims on his car and say "whoa, he looks like a killer", either. You might find increased risks in certain populations, but many people who are labeled "at risk" go on to lead productive or normal lives.
Seeing as there are so many people on this board posting over a set # of years, it'd be surprising NOT to find a killer or two.

Yes, from a public image of AS standpoint, this isn't good. And every time someone with schizophrenia or mental retardation is arrested for murder, that is black eye for all people with those conditions, especially because we live in a society that stereotypes and pre-judges. It isn't ideal, but that is the way it sometimes works.

Your going to probably have a bunch more tourists coming looking at us forum posters like we're a bunch of caged animals.

"Oh thats the forum where the killer came from, lets go look at the aspies".

::feels weird::

That seems ridiculous to me. When myspace is mentioned in the news nobody decides that everyone on myspace is a bunch of caged animals.

Alex, you know as well as myself and others that were on here back when the William Freund incident that we ended up having a huge amount of traffic on the forums for several days after the fact. I remember days where we had double the amount of normal traffic during that time and the site being really slow.

^^^I agree with Alex. This all seems like paranoid thinking. For most people who read about that murder, the word asperger's will probably go in one eye and out the other. They don't know about it and probably don't care.

No, and the Earth isn't a single living entity, that doesn't mean the Gaia hypothesis isn't a useful tool in some situations. The media does often seem to have a sort of groupthink, Dawkins' idea of the "meme," is very visible in the US mass media in particular, ideas can snowball within that arena very quickly.

CHICAGO (WBBM) - The man who is accused of murdering Chicago dermatologist Dr. David Cornbleet almost a year ago apparently was posting Web logs four months after the murder, discussing his emotions, which he called "more warped... than those of most other people."

WBBM's Steve Miller has the story.

"I have a variety of mental issues," the Web log author wrote. "Depression, extreme shyness, and some shades of OCD."

The author, "hans rp", is believed to be Hans Peterson, the man accused of murdering Dr. David Cornbleet.

The Web site: wrongplanet.net, for people with Asperger's Syndrome, a developmental disorder marked by difficulty in social skills.

The blogs were posted under the heading: "Do I have Asperger's? Does it matter?"

He wrote: "I was always considered talented and gifted in school, but I struggled socially (many people felt I was mute), and I have never been in a real relationship in my life despite my above average physical attractiveness."

Peterson was also posting comments on another site, blaming the acne drug Accutane - prescribed by Cornbleet - for making him impotent.

I have two points here.

First, a large number of the members on this site, myself included, have made posts like that. I didn't see anything wrong with his post, it was a perfectly viable WP post, and he only posted 2 times, it's not exactly like he was a regular. Does this mean that any of us would be in the news if we killed someone? I think so, because that makes it a better story. None of us should kill anybody, but if you have to, kill a reporter. :P (Just kidding, don't kill anyone, not even Geraldo)

Second, what the hell ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? It says he is "accused" of murdering that dermatologist, and he is from Chicago which is in America which means that this guy is innocent until proven guilty. He might really be innocent, they provide very few details about the investigation. Even if he is innocent, he is guilty in the kangaroo court of public opinion.

Considering statistically speaking 1 in 200 people will end up committing murder at some point in their life and the fact that this forum is a concentration of people who have been horribly misunderstood and mistreated by society in general the fact that so few murders have occurred is surprising and a testament perhaps to how much more self control and civility is present among autistics in contrast with the average population.

Yes, of course this affects how people look on Aspies..unfortunatly.. In Sweden they had a series of programs with the name "Ondska" (translated "Evil"). One of the murderers in one of the program had Asperger's Syndrome. They mentioned that most Aspies aren't evil, but it affected anyway. My sister called me after she had seen this program and asked me questions about how my feelings are working and things like that 8O That felt strange and I felt so missunderstood, how could she think something like that about me? :?
