When there's no work that defines my sleep, I stay awake until the sun comes out, get tired and sleep for about 12 hours. The time I'm awake moves about 1-2 hours forward every day until I get depressed from the lack of sunlight, stay awake for 2 days straight and start the whole cycle anew.
When I'm awake I don't like to sleep and ignore it as much as possible and when I'm sleeping I don't like being awake and try to ignore that. The only reason I get any social interaction that way was by putting it all into my dreams. Doesn't improve my ability to cope with humans, but works for me. :)

Any mental effort or routine to break that crazy cycle didn't work so far.

Anything more than 7.5 hours and I get nasty headaches, I get by with about 6 hours.

Need? 8ish hours of solid sleep will get me by just fine.

But, I sometimes take the opportunity to sleep longer than that, for it is beyond those 8 hours that I experience my most intense and vivid dreams. This usually comes at a cost, for there is a certain point where too much sleep actually ends up making you more tired and possibly ill (as others here have commented). But, for me it's worth it for it is in my Dreamlands that I am most alive; unlike real life, I can still feel balanced and reasonable emotions in the Dreamlands.

Good fortune,

I've yet to discover what I actually "need" for sleep. There are times where I'll go for two or three days without any sleep (involuntarily, but I go just the same; needless to say, I'm irritable (more so than usual) by the third day, but I'm still functioning), and then there are times where I'd be perfectly content to just sleep through most of the day. I slept 14 hours last Friday, and would have slept more had it not been for outside interference.

With school back in session, I get about five hours of sleep on a good weekday night ("good" generally equates to having no essays that I can put off until midnight), usually closer to four. I tend to be tired, but not too much.

Oversleeping makes me feel like I'm wasting away the day though (which, in some times, is good), so I try not to do it too often.

I go to bed around 9 p.m. and begin the day at 6 a.m. However, the cats wake me up around 4 a.m. Sometimes, though, I have terrible insomnia.

I'm not sure I get the sleep I would do better with, but I generally average between 4 - 6 hrs.

If I've stayed up all night long (not as frequent as it once was) or for a couple of days (not that often), then I may sleep extra hours if I can.

I have taken naps from time-to-time also to make up for the shortage, I guess. :D

I think I need about 7.5 to feel good. However 7.5 hours of sleep usually means at least 9 hours in bed for me.

It takes me at least 45 minutes to get to sleep when I go to bed then I usually drift in and out of sleep in the morning. No matter what I always wake up after about 6 hours of sleep but still feel sleepy, so I end up lying awake for like 20 mintutes and then falling asleep again, then it repeats. It's such a waste.

I do well on about 6 hours of sleep or less, but if I get 8 hours, I'm tired for the rest of the day. I do best on about 5 hours, and am just kind of slap happy if I get 4 or less, lol.
