Well, for high affirmative emphasis, I dart out my index finger.
People may think I'm pointing at something specific.
For low affirmative emphasis, I wag my index finger in the air.
For "Wow!" emphasis, mostly when I'm lecturing I raise and widely space my whole arms waggedly,
often accompanied by a stock phrase like "It's that easy!" or "A-ma-a-a-a-y-zing!"
For "Nooooooooo!" emphasis, I clench my fists in the air.
For "Gasp!" emphasis, I put my hand to my chest.

As for "having a mind of their own," if I'm not expressing anything I often flap and twiddle them as I don't know what to do with my hands.

I do some gesturing, but nothing that would be considered out of the ordinary.

Tim

i fidget alot when I am talking to people. I am always fiddling with things, and usually have my attention focused on something other than the person I am talking to,
i do know that whenever i get really engaged in explaining something, sometimes my head just starts bouncing...and sometimes whoever i am talking to will mimic my bouncing head....either that, or I am mimicing theirs..I am not sure..

I'm not sure if this counts but I do a lot of gesturing even when not in conversation. I keep subconsciously doing the hook 'em, rock on hand gesture with the index and pinky fingers. I can't stop doing it. :x

I try to keep my hand gesturing in check, when I am at work and I am speaking if the listener begins to focus on my hands I stop using them because I know that they shouldn't be drawing that much attention

My hands just seem to fly all over the place when I am talking, and when I am having to listen to someone else talk for a long period, I find myself getting agitated and attention veering in other directions.

I do this too. Also I noticed the aspie model wannabe Heather on "America's Next Top Model" does this, and none of the other model-wannabes do.

Isn't that what is referred to as hand flapping? Hand flapping is considered a symptom of ASD.

I always saw flapping as a more measured thing I suppose, sort of back and forth rather than hands flying off in all directions.
