Yes, because I tend to overanalyse things, including emotions and get tied in mental knots.

I've had soo many people tell me that before, ohhh you think too much! Meaning I always think into detail about everything, like why did the chicken cross the road, its a joke but to me, it was like really why did he haha?

People are always telling me this!! ! I don't understand how you cannot be constantly thinking :?. I can't ever imagine my mind being the slightest bit blank... w/ out a million thoughts working themselves out at once!

heard that alot. It turns out, it's true. Often times it prevents me from doing things that might actually be okay or fun. Things become more complex than they actually are. Sometimes its good to just do something (well unless it's hurting others or yourself) to show yourself that it wasn't half as complicated or bad as you made it out to be in your head.

I totally agree with you there. Usually I like the fact that I think "too much," because if the world isn't inspiring me, I can kind of inspire myself by analyzing it, or something. (Don't know if that makes sense.) But when I start analyzing certain things, especially social occasions, I often talk myself out of them and regret it later. But only a little, since I'm usually warm in my room, listening to my music or writing a story or playing the piano or whatever makes me happy...

Oh yes.

I dated someone who used to say (with a smile), "yer thinkin' too much" all the time. Actually, I think it was good for me to hear that, because I don't realize when I'm doing it, and it doesn't really serve any purpose, other than to drive me crazy and annoy the other person. I really appreciated getting called out on it, because most other guys I date just look at me funny (probably, in hindsight), say nothing, and break up with me a month later.

As someone with a college degree in philosophy, I feel qualified to state that thinking is overrated.

Never stopped me, though.

All the time.

I get it usually in the "Why are you so interested in {X}, it really doesn't matter?" kinda sense. (I had it recently about an odd gap between tiles in the ceiling in a building I was in recently; I wondered aloud for 5-10 minutes about what it could be for, ruled out possibilities, etc. It looked deliberate, so I was curious!)

Someone described it recently along these lines:
"I say, isn't the sky blue. Instead of saying 'Sure' or 'Yeah', you look all around, compare shades of blue, work out how much cloud cover there is, if the sun is setting and discolouring the sky, and answer like 'Yeah but over there it's pretty grey'".

Constantly while I was in school (teachers saying "you're making this harder than it has to be"), also in regular life. Never made any sense to me being told that I think too much. Like, what am I gonna' do, think less ? That's like saying breathe less !
Thinking is what my brain does, I can't think it into not thinking-how crazy a suggestion is that ? It's like saying don't listen, don't see, don't smell etc.-except I can't "close" my brain in way I can cover my eyes or ears, my brain doesn't need external input to do what it does (generate thoughts). It's not like the people have some clever idea of how I might think less, some substitute function.
I over-feel (emotionally) as well as over-think, but that isn't a familiar phrase ("you overfeel things"), so people just repeat the line about overthinking.

To play devil's advocate, I think the basis of the NT argument is one of economics: yes, you can think about things to infinity, but your time is limited, and it's a matter of what's important to think about. A matter of focus and priority. If you get caught up in minute detail, is it productive? What is the end result of such contemplation? Some people can make amazing juxtapositions and discoveries doing this, but for the most part, I think it's just a matter of "does it matter" in the long run.

But on the other side, NT's think too much as well...it's usually about "people" stuff. They couldn't care less about gaps in ceilings or why things are configured, but ask them if they heard the latest about so and so's such and such and they'll go on and on.

I've been accused of "over-analyzing" a situation many times before...

Is that close enough?
