ever since I can remember being alive, I've had rather odd obsessions/addictions over foodstuffs, objects etc, over the past couple of years coca cola has become a major addiction, most probably due to the sugar and caffeine in it. I have tried a lot to get off of it and it's like going through cold turkey, it makes me feel so rotten I can't do anything much for like 5 days, it's like a serious addiction but nobody takes me serioulsy cuz it's a fizzy pop.....I really need to cut down as it's not doing my anxiety any good.

Help.....

how about trying either diet coca cola [sugar free with caffeine, silver can, easily found],or the caffeine free diet[?] coca cola [gold can, harder to find],or pepsi max even?
they can take a while to get used to but are a good comprimise.

reduce the amount of the regular coca cola very slowly, dont just give it up completely.
and as it goes on,start introducing something else, just dont rush it.

am find am lucky with this sort of stuff, never get any problems with stopping something immediately unless its part of routine.

For me it's Mountain Dew. Drink it every day. I had to make a choice, though--- but I couldn't give it up. So I made a compromise. Now I drink Diet Mountain Dew. I figure at least it's got no sugar, and it still has my caffeine kick. Maybe a compromise would work for you. I've gotten to where I can even drink other things sometimes, like milk (soy milk is yummy) or even juice... though I always carry a Dew on me, just in case of emergency...

We should start a random thread about which soda each person is in love with... :D

I find ice-water to be a nice stimulant. Drinking it is a completely different experience from drinking water that's merely cool. Try it!

'diet' drinks are typically a cocktail of poisons FAR worse than the ones they replace. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy

I gave up drinks like this when i was younger.
I noticed weight gains were becoming an issue in my surroundings.
People were drinking litres per day of the stuff.
Being concerned that i stayed thin i stopped drinking it.
Now i basicly only drink it when i'm over at a friends house.

I have however gotten a redbull addiction last year.
Drank it every morning and several times a day.
But because it was so bad for my body i gave it up.
So i decided since i need some addiction, i'l start drinking coffee.
It's much healthyer, even though it's not *good* either.

Not sure if this is good advice, but it's proberbly better than cola.
Coffee doesn't require a mass of sugar.

You have to bear in mind that we have epidemics of obesity and diabetes (at least in the USA), and that coca cola is responsible for at least a good portion of this.

I think that it would help your cause if you started to regard coca cola as a mortal enemy to your good health, and felt that every time you bought a coca cola you were only enriching an evil corporation that was bent on addicting and destroying the health of its customers, then this might go a ways towards convincing yourself that coca cola wasn't for you.

I'd like to see how the tests where administered before drawing a conclusion about this sugar substitute. This reminds me of the other artificial sweetener banned for causing brain tumors in the early 90's ((I believe)) The testing done was ridiculous. They took live rats, injected the sugar substitute directly into the brain ((with saline solution)), and recorded the results. Moral of those tests- if stick a needle into your brain and fill it with fake sugar, tumors are likely to occur.

Used to be addicted to Lucozade, for 6 years. then it started to give me mouth ulcers and I had to find an alternative. Step up and take a bow, chocolate milk.

I also deal with a coca-cola addiction. 2 - 3 liters per day. The one problem is that my teeth are badly damaged by it and that because of my oversensory problems I don't feel like dentist visits. I should have my teeth fixed under complete narcosis maybe.

As for my addiction: I don't want to stop. It is my only vice. I do not smoke, rarely drink alcohol, never touched any drug, eat healthy... My coca-cola is my only addiction and I honestly think that one vice is not that bad so I just let it be.

If you really want to stop you may want to consider switching to Sprite for a while. It will fulfill your need for sugar but it lacks the caffeine. At a later stage once you have stepped down from your need for coca-cola, you can also stop the other sodas and switch to water or tea. Take it step by step and first switch to diet coke or to another soda, once your body is no longer crying for coca-cola you can also stop the other soda. Good luck with it, I wish I had the same character strength to give up my coca-cola darling. That said, I am opening my 3rd can of coke this afternoon and the night is still young - slainte! :)

I heard drinking Pepsi will help you kick your Coca Cola addiction.

Have you considered that the banned sugar substitute you mentioned would have been a direct challenge to the market share of aspartame? Who funded those studies and who profits from the outcome?

I have not had any soda type drinks (diet or otherwise) for about 6 weeks - and I don't miss them much any more.

You just have to get past the withdrawal period.

The thing is that the more you have, the more you want. They also make you crave other junk food.

Try sparkling water instead.

I have one coke a day I find it perks me up but some days it tastes too syrupy. If you wean off it (I would recommend getting some of those mini cans) you will find it is possible to wean and when you re-taste it will just taste too sweet. Try green tea as an alternative caffeine fix.

Just don't buy it, and if someone in your house do, just throw it away or force them to drink it quickly. Just don't drink it. You can write it on your glassess so you won't forget ;) Simple, but it works, at least for me. You need strong will, but it's the best method :P
