I get anxious just having to respond to the world. My high school years were spent with having dread each and every morning, resulting in long term digestive problems (now resolved) and other manifestations of anxiety. Somehow I got a 3.8 GPA and into a good university. I have no idea how, looking back. I wasn't responding to school pressure as much as the pressure of living, breathing, and leaving the house.

I also have way more anxiety about whether or not I should talk to a person sitting next to me in clas than whether or not I would get into a good school. Little things make me so nervous, but an 8 page paper or college apps, while stressful, don't make me nearly as freaked out. I also had digestive problems from late middle school-late high school. I assumed I had IBS or something for a while, but it went away without a noticeable diet change, and hasn't returned. Stress did aggravate it, but I didn't feel like it was always stress induced. It severely impaired my life but I hid it well and didn't tell my parents about it - now, even though Im stressed out about starting college, it hasn't returned. I wonder what that was about.

When I try to ignore my anxiety, it won't go away. It gets worse until I don't have body awareness, like I wouldn't know if I were upsidedown or sideways, except that I can see that I'm rightsideup. I start to get spacy. It never helped me to tough it out.

I am constantly anxious, about all sorts of things, but as far as I can remember I was told I was the most laid back person, which suggests that I am very good at hiding it. I don't know whether that is neccessarily a good thing or not. Sometimes I have found myself anxious over a potential situation, a dilemma, I guess. The best way of getting over it is taking a deep breath and pick the most difficult option, and do it. I know its impulse, but I wouldn't have got as far as I have without taking the occassional risk. Then it is one less thing to worry about.

A good example for me is phone calls. I hate them intensely, and think about who I have to speak to, for how long, about what in particular. But sometimes I grit my teeth and make them, giving myself the just do it approach, and I feel a little more confident, if slightly exhausted from the whole experience. I know I'm slightly digressing here, but overcoming my anxiety by taking little steps helps me take bigger steps without the anxiety.
