One of my first obssessions as achild was dinosaurs, and apparantly I told my parents that God couldn't exist, because there was no mention of dinosaurs in the bible, yet my books had photographs of fossils in them. I maintained that standpoint for a very long time, but now I feel that it is not my place to judge the faith of others, so I choose to accept that everyone is entitled to believe what they want to. The only part that irks me is the type of religion that makes life and death decisions for you, and not letting you make them yourself.

That being said, I believe in fate and destiny, not coincidence and luck. It's a hard concept for some to accept, but I feel that everything happens for a reason, like my AS. If I let myself consider that there is no reason at all for the way I am, then I would find things harder to take.

Most recently, although it is an interest at the moment, I'm looking into the religions of old, Norse, Greek and Roman, Egyptian, Gaelic Pagan, because an incredible amount of imagination went into the descriptions of the gods and the stories around them.

On an interesting side note, apparantly some Christian thinkers feel that yoga is evil. Riiight...

You don't have to adhere to a religion to live a fulfilling spiritual existence.

You can live a moral life because you know it's right, instead of because some book cobbled together from various Iron Age authors (espousing Iron Age values that are hopelessly outdated to modern society) told you those are the rules. If you act morally merely because you are following a law and not because it's the right thing to do, you are no better a person than one who acts immorally.

You can discover what is right through experience and do it because you know deep down that it's right to act for others, instead of doing it to earn eternal bliss for yourself. If you act morally to gain a personal reward, you are no better than a person who acts immorally.

You can find your own personal spirituality rather than trying to cram your beliefs into the stifling, narrow box of religion. You can forge your own path rather than be a follower who doesn't have to think for him/herself. It' incredibly fulfilling.

I am so sorry to hear about your experiences you will find in all religions some strange people who would say things and do things that are strange those people are not serious believers.

I don't think anyone on this forum has mentioned Buddhism - have they? If you are Buddhist you can be at peace and be loved! :) I am practising Buddhism but I'm not doing very well.

I've had a really rough road religiously in my life, so I'll cut it down to the cliff notes version: Born, baptised and raised Catholic, was told by the woman who molested me that Jesus wanted us together, tried Protestant religions, almost converted to Judaism, became a Pagan, tried to be a good Christian after 9/11, came back to Catholicism after JP2 died, flipped back and forth between Catholicism and Wicca for several years, firmly decided on Catholicism, recently read the New Testament and was disappointed, and now I'm wondering if I belong where I am yet again.

Anyone else have problems understanding religion? I do find it to be important in life, because my faith in God has helped me get through alot. But to me believing in God is done by all religions, not just Christians, etc. I'm just wondering if this is a common Aspie struggle or am I just really screwed up on this issue personally?

Feel free to move to a more appropriate forum if necessary. :)

I'M SO SORRY THAT HAPPENED TO YOU!

I feel for you!

No, I am going through the same thing as you are, though I'm not getting molested or anything...:P

But I am having trouble with my friends, because most of them are Christian, but I know they believe I am going to hell, but I don't believe in that at all. Also I have a stupid bible teacher that just pushes his views down my throat. I feel alone in my school. On the apperance, you wouldn't think so, but really, I am. :(

So now I HATE christianity. I want nothing to do with the bible. I HATE Satanistim too, since they burn animals.

The only things I believe in right now are the law of attraction and a bit of Daoism.

8O me too! dad made me study with jehovahs witnesses when i was 10, i treated it as story time, i could not believe adults actually believed this crap. I asked them about dinosaurs, no answers. Every week id ask different questions, none could be answered. What a waste of time.

My mom practices a bit of Buddhism. I think a lot of it makes sense and I feel more at peace when I meditate than when I pray.

I became very interested in mineral collecting (thus my nickname). I read allot of mineral books from communist Czechoslovakia (translated into English) and I feel that I owe these mineral book for increasing my skepticism of religion. I am atheist. In fact, Czechoslovakia was quite clever. Unlike other Soviet era communist countries they did not oppress religion, they gave their population an excellent science education, published lots of astronomy and geology books and people developed their own ideas.

I believe that religion is a thought virus - a infection that affects the minds of people.

Science is corrosive to religious belief.

The riddle of Epicurus

If God is willing to prevent evil, but is not able to
Then He is not omnipotent.

If He is able, but not willing
Then He is malevolent.

If He is both able and willing
Then whence cometh evil?

If He is neither able nor willing
Then why call Him God?

I'm under the impression that most Christians believe that Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims are all going to hell. I suggest that if we are so condemned that we will be in good company. I'm being a little facetious when I say that.

That's right. Christianity holds that no matter how good a person you are, if you don't subscribe to their particular belief system, and try to "save" everyone who doesn't, you are doomed to hell. People like Gandhi: in hell. Buddha? Eternal damnation. I find it not just absurd but insulting to the vast majority of the world. If you are Christian and do wrong, then do nothing at all to make up for it, then ask your god for forgiveness, you get eternal bliss. You live a life of service to other people but don't believe exactly what they do: the fiery pit for you.

Ugh.

Interesting. I sometimes joke that I belong to 25 religions. The joke is that it is not a joke. ;-)

Me. I mentioned it earlier in the thread. I'm a semi-practicing Buddhist.

And that's where Christianity first started to lose me. I'm pretty sure this goes back to the time of Constantine, who was doing everything to unite his state. Follow, or suffer for all eternity.
