I sucked the index finger on my right hand, in all sorts of situations, for years. I don't remember precisely how old I was when I stopped; it was right before I started Grade 8, because that was when I got braces and a metal expander put in, and there was no room for the finger. I freaked out for several weeks, before finding another stim I could use. My parents had tried everything up until that point; gloves, tape, slathering my hand in tabasco sauce (which I still won't eat), even an appliance from the dentist specifically designed to stop finger sucking. But nothing ever got me to stop. I haven't done it badly since the braces came off when I was sixteen or seventeen, but if I'm really stressed or thinking, I'll sometimes start sucking on one of my fingers even now.
Oh you got subjected to all of that as well?
Did your appliance look like snake fangs at the top of your mouth? Mine did. I stopped sucking my thumb while I had it on, and stayed stopped for a year after it was off, until I encountered the 6th grade.
