Does your social ineptness make you feel like a jerk?
Yes definitely. People often think I am being rude or arrogant when I really don't think I am. For instance my boss was at the bottom of a flight of stairs. He's a big guy and moves quite slowly. I figured there was enough room for both of us to get by so I quickly descended the stairs. My boss decided for whatever reason to wait (maybe thought there wasn't enough room). I said thanks, but from the look on his face as I went by I could tell he wasn't impressed.
My guess is he thought I was rude for going first because he's the boss. But my logic (gets me in trouble all the time) was that I was quick and would be out the way before he'd even got to the first step or even if he decided to not wait, there was enough room for both of us on the stairs. I though a win win situation. Apparently he thought not
Or sometimes I'll not respond to someone other than to nod and they just think I can't be bothered to reply, whereas I am struggling to think of what to say. By the time I have the natural window of opportunity has passed.
