We shouldn`t have to carry cards or wear tags advertising our Aspergers/autism because of the ignorance of police officers whose job IS TO BE PERCEPTIVE AND USE THEIR BRAIN to assess situations/behaviour.Do American police services have modern selection and training processes or is it all kicking ass and taking names? :?

Thanks for everybodys support, thing is my nt boyfriend told the original cop right away i was autistic, my bf even has an autistic license plate! The cop didnt care, when he told other cops he use the words "some form of retardation!" Which completely just shocked me. The way i was treated completely messed me up, i ended up freaking out all night, ticcing like crazy, shaking, and what bothers me even more, they had a autism awareness workshop, but not many officers showed up. I called the police station awhile ago to complain last time we got pulled over about how nasty the officer treated me then verbally! The cop on the phone then talked to me like i was 2, literally, and said he will make sure to train more cops. Obviously not, my mother is going down to the station or calling today to figure things out. I hate it, i completely lost so much faith and respect for cops ten times more. I wish i was able to talk, i would have said A LOT believe me! I couldnt even respond, felt like i was completely shut off from the world. I'm going to check out those bracelets, i somehow lose everything i have so i dont know if cards a good idea. I had a print out of that one site about autism and the law enforcement, but left it at home. So maybe ill check into that bracelet idea. Thanks again. I havent slept yet, and idk if i will, i keep loosing it more and more.
try to get some sleep even its hard...after that u will feel much better eat someting...make u self comforable :)

Sucky situation.

If you can wear a bracelet (I cannot), it'd be a real good idea, especially considering that your first instinct was to run (running from police isn't usually the best of ideas for many reasons). Best just to sit there in the car and show the medical bracelet, or something of a similar guise if you cannot talk.

that's terrible and you should have gotten their badge numbers for their behavior!

but keep this in mind...

after watching cops, i can attest that there are some CRAZY women out there... even ones that come in small packages, such as you.... so keep in mind that they don't know if you're hopped up on A, B, or C........

did you tell them you're autistic and that you need a moment to please leave you alone and that you'' sit quietly???

anyway, they shouldn't have been laughing.

im sorry you were so stressed out. i doubt your bf was mad.

what'd they pull ya for?

That's unfortunate. But the police were not in the wrong in pursuing, you were running, as if you had performed some sort of crime. Shouldn't have run. Maybe excessive force though.

This event was a real nightmare and I hope you can calm down soon Age.

I never had a run in with the police when I was already having a meltdown in public, but I always imaged it must be a nightmare. I don't think you were wrong running or freaking out, because I'm sure you wouldn't have done unless you couldn't helped it. I know I certainly don't voluntarily have a meltdown in public, so yeah, don't feel bad at yourself please! It's not your fault!

I think it's the fault of the cops entirely. They had workshops available, they didn't attend, so there's no excuse for their behaviour. They could have attended a workshop, but nooo, they didn't, their fault entirely. Gosh, I don't need to that ignorance no to attend the workshop do I.

Didn't you meet some decent cops sometime ago? I remember a topic in which you said one officer was understanding the situation because he had attended this workshop. If I recall this correctly, once you feel better try not to forget that there do seem to be good cops where you live too.

The bracelet sounds like a good idea anyway. Not just for cops. You live in the US and I think you can get them easily there I believe?

I feel bad for what happened to you Age1600. Some cops can be real a-holes. Don't blame yourself for anything that happened because none of it was your fault. There really wasn't anything you could have done.

Wow, that is quite a story, I hope you feel better soon Age.

Before cops get training on autistics they need to get training on common sense and decency.

This is why I try to avoid being near hippies or hipsters, even though they often have the same interests as me.

that's pretty f****d up and I hope you get better. But you do know that getting out of the car was the wrong thing to do. by you running the cop prolly thought you may have had drugs on you or had an warrent out for your arrest. That's why he was so rough. What did you get pulled for?

Yea it is, when i got out of the car, it felt like my brain disappeared, i just took off, it was so weird how it felt like i wasnt even doing it, felt like it was just a reaction that went wrong i guess. Anyways we dont know why we got pulled over actually, he followed us into cvs, then drove around to the other store around it, until we pulled out, and then he followed behind us at a red light, then followed us for a bit until they pulled us over. My bf gets harassed by nj cops allllll the time, cuz he has an out of state license plate still, hasnt got it transformed over yet, so they think an easy ticket, kid wont fight it. He also has a fast car, but he doesn't go any faster then 2 miles over the speed limit, hes not stupid. This has happened once before too, and the cop was yelling at me, i freaked out then, got out of the car and headbanged against the tree extremely hard. I hate cops with a passion now!

Age1600,

This may be read wrong. You certainly DON'T seem ret*d. Even taking into account your stims, etc, they should NOT have acted like that. I once saw a person that acted REALLY WEIRD, and upset the WHOLE floor. HIS problem? Diabetic shock!

I WISH I could say Law and order was not real. OK, it ISN'T really real. Cops DO act like that, DO make those deals, etc... The fake part is that they usually DON'T find that all their suspects are involved.

Anyway, I wish you better luck in the future.

Not a good thing running from cops, some will use excessive force on people who make a break for it.

Make up that card and have it right there with your ID or license.

I hope you never have to go through an experience like that again.

If you are ever pulled over again, do you think you could start preparing yourself to show the ID/Card and not bolting like you did.
I have to say, running from officers will trigger more aggressive actions on their part.
They not only may suspect you of wrong doing, but also they have no idea whether you are armed with a weapon or not.
Their adrenaline kicks in and that with other factors is what makes so many officers lose control when they do.
They can really get amped up.

You need to teach yourself some sort of key phrase, or thoughts which can help you calm down and stay in the car next time.
This is for your own safety.

I agree. however the officers had no right to laugh at you. That was condescending and rude. What buttholes.
