This kind of "cure" would actually be a "curse" on the human race. Ironically autism is probably one of the main contributors to technological advancement over the centuries. If it weren't for autism (ie. the autistic/aspie inventors) we'd all probably be sitting in our mud huts wondering where the next meal was coming from. If we remove autism from our world, we remove a substantial amount of the world's collective brainpower.

I liked 'change your mind' , and 'everybody's jumping everybody else's train', but after 'Love Cats' they just got silly and....what?...;)

this do seem to be a perennial thread...

Here's my take from reading both sides of the argument:

The people wanting "cure" want the same things people who don't want a cure are striving for. Like it or not I think some of the points of neurodiversity, the pro cure people want too... It's a breakdown of communication. Both want social change... The difference is the pro cure people seem to think change the individual and not the bullies...

The anti-cure people seem to think change the bullies and not the individual. I think bullies need to be cured, and I think people from both sides agree... Just the ones pro cure seem to have given up hope that bullies can be changed... They need to be encouraged.
-------------------------

Pro cure people view: Autism being the reaction from an environmental factor that changed a "normal" person into an autistic one. Like it or not it's pointless to dispute with them about vaccinations, etc...

In fact I believe either way nothing can go wrong if both sides can work together to find an alternative way of immunizing children than the vaccines... I'm not going to argue with them about the vaccines...because I see that part pointless...

I figure if the vaccines "cause" or trigger worse autism symptoms, then improving the environment will result in a reduction of asd dxs... (Or as I think, autism will continue on, but on a milder scale than what seems to occur if the shots have a factor.)

If there is no connection between vaccines and autism, then there won't be a change in the autism dx's. Either way it doesn't hurt to remove the "offending" substances form vaccines if it will make a bunch of people happy.

If either of these are true, those people will have to find it out firsthand before they can fully understand whether or not vaccinations have anything to do with autism. No amount of telling someone otherwise will help.

In a way I almost think, let them believe shots make autism worse. At least that would cause them to take action to safer vaccines and take the blame away from genetics... Ideally I'd like to see something between the vaccines we have and no vaccine... Either way seems to be unacceptable. Having vaccines with "offending" substances is unacceptable to those who believe it triggers autism or an autoimmune effect. It's unacceptable for those who don't want rapid pandemics to just let people go unvaccinated... There's got to be a way both sides can come up with a common solution to satisfy all.
---------------
The aspie behaviors and strengths we talk about are what they consider normal. They don't want those traits lost either.
We consider those behaviors related to our autism. We don't want thse traits lost.

Some of us believe that there may be external factors that need to be addressed and worked on so we can keep our autism but rid ourselves of these external factors.
Some of them believe that our autism IS the external stuff that makes things worse...

Either way it's hard to change anyone's minds by brute force... It just won't happen... But we do need to work together with the members of AS to get change done rather than just attack...

Attack just causes defensive behaviors... It just makes the wall built tougher and higher...
If we want to change the attitudes people have about autism, it will take a lot of understanding from both sides, willingness to set aside opinion and personal feelings to work on ways to understand what is being said behind the opinion and then find something in common that both sides can agree on and come up with a solution together.

I hope this makes sense. Right now the only jigsaw puzzle I see on their forum composes of two pieces... Those two pieces need to fit together for the puzzle to be finished...and for a true solution to be reached and change to be done. The only problem right now: Both sides (pieces) are magnetic and set at the same poles... thus preventing anything being done... and resulting in ill feelings from both sides about each other...

Let’s stop this us vs. them mentality and work on ways to create a team.

I believe management is better than treatment for this kind of thing because we, as a race, need to learn to accept all facets of people's personality and i believe this is a big part of mine. I think what I want then to discover is a way for me to remember names. Most the people in this room have names, but I don't remember most of them. And most of them would probably be offended by my not knowing their names.

I also think that better general understanding an knowledge would lead to a better relationship between Auties/Aspies and Neurotypicals.

I'm not broken either.

I don't want to be stuck with a needle or pop pills just to make everybody else happy. Because at the end of the day, I won't be happy.

People talk about 'cures' but they really don't ask us how we feel. It makes me feel like they don't care about what I think or what I want.

It makes me feel like what's being said is 'we can't be bothered to try, so why don't we just make them like us.'

Why do we have to try so hard?

Why can't they try hard too?

Why should we pop pills to 'fit'?

What if it were the other way around?

Would the world say the same thing?

Would they refuse our 'cure'?

None of us are broken, not Aspies, not NT's not anyone.

We're all people -we all need to work hard.
