Wow, I got in trouble for the exact same thing! I was looking up at the ceiling, but no one had taught me that by doing so without moving my head to look meant I was being rude, and I got in so much trouble.

In the fourth grade, my class was taking a spelling quiz. The kid sitting next to me whispered a question to me. The next thing I knew, the teacher had reached over my shoulder and crumpled up my paper. I began to cry without saying anything, and the kid sitting next to me told the teacher he'd talked and I hadn't said anything. The teacher uncrumpled my paper and gave it back, and threw the other kid's paper out (without dramatically crumpling it.)
