While I respect your feelings on the matter, it is the correct usage of the word - symptoms are a sign of the existence of something else. Unless something is found that sums up the impact better, it is a word that I myself will continue to use, albeit with restraint when talking with you.
Not sure about your comments regarding tests; all tests are inherently biased, so any results should be taken with a grain of salt... but they can be helpful in providing direction. Just not worth investing full faith into.
