CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE ASPERGER'S SOUL

Ingredients:

1 lb chicken, boneless, diced
1/2 lb carrots, diced
1 lb egg noodles...

 I've never read any of the Chicken Soup books, and for the longest time I really thought they were some sort of recipe book.

I think it could be an interesting read, and probably the first one of the series to not be all sappy. If people with AS wrote it, it would get straight to the point, and have lots of useful information without all the feel good warm fuzzies.

It wouldn't be Chicken Soup without feel good warm fuzzies! :albino:

Personally I find the books a bit off-putting, but I'd be willing to chip in.

Have you already contacted them?

No, not yet. Nobody has replyed to the "I'm not sure how I should do it" part of my post.

Then it would definitely be worth checking into. I'm sure if we all put our heads together here we could come up with plenty of material for it - especially in regard to those who have developed excellent coping skills (for how we're treated in society and how we function within it).

Agreed. It would be a good opportunity to get a positive, more understandable message out there, that is if Autism Speak doesn't sniff it out and stage a coup.

I could write one out as an example for everyone and post it, if you like. I'm quite interested in this.

Here's a pretty basic idea:

Dear Chicken Soup and associates,

As the general public knows, your books feature stories and support for many walks of life. This is greatly appreciated. I would like to suggest a new book topic: Chicken Soup for the Aspergers/HFA Soul. I know you have publish a book concerning Autistic/Special Needs children, but the spectrum reaches beyond these specifications.

I would really love to see one written for and written by those living with these conditions. There is a lot of interest in this topic as of late, and this would really be the time to come out with something in support of those living with AS/HFA without the bullied interference of some institutes claiming to speak for those whom they don’t really listen to.

As an “aspie” (as we’ve dubbed ourselves), I would be truly helpful to get the insight of others with this condition and how they handle society and societies views of them.

I only hope for your consideration in what I believe is a needed continuation of your helpful series.

Thank you,

A. K. Mullinax

What do you think? Does that help?

I would definitely take this out. Why present such a belligerent attitude in the letter? Referring to (presumably) Autism Speaks and similar organizations as bullies? That is completely not appropriate for a letter to a disinterested outside source such as Chicken Soup for the Soul. They don't care about the Autism Speaks/neurodiversity debate- they just want to know if there are interesting stories out there for a future book.

Moreover, the Chicken Soup people will probably be less inclined to create an AS/HFA book if they think it will present a hostile attitude that may alienate some readers- readers who feel Autism Speaks represents their point of view. It's possible to present a realistic view of life on the HF end of the spectrum without directly offending those who cater to children on the other end.

I would include an article about the life of Roger Bannister, who displayed many AS tendencies and excelled in life.

Agreed. This was just a example draft I did in a couple minutes. Couldn't help the jibe, though.

Yes, and ADULTS with disabilities don't exist, either. At least, that's what you'd think nowadays, since most services and groups are for children and/or the "saintly" families.
