I have realized that for me, I use language like a tool. It's just something I use sometimes to get what I want. A hoop I have to jump through. I have no internal compulsion to speak to others. My sense of self is not inherently wrapped up with my use of language. When I speak, it is like picking up a tool and using it for a purpose, then putting it down when I'm done. Like a hammer is not actually a part of my hand when I use it, language is not actually a part of me.

I can totally relate to that.

also, being multilingual I've always found switching between languages a bit like operating one of those old stereos with that radio/cd/tape switch. the switch in my head is almost tangible, a seriously freaky feeling, anyone else had that?

Language is inherently a part of me. I couldn't conceive life without words. I couldn't conceive the world without words. They are my gateway into reality. They are my only channel across the chasm of intersubjectivity. They are my only window into other minds. Words are my stock in trade. My lifeblood.
