Sometimes it's not the content of what you say that offends a person, but the topic of conversation itself. Maybe this was not an intellectual peer and felt offended by the ""level"" of your conversation in itself.

Answer too quickly and you offend someone.
Don't answer quick enough and you're rude for not talking or socialising.

A few more to add:

- Cite an authoritative resource and you're a mindless puppet.
- Disagree or present an alternate perspective and you're a troll.
- Make a suggestion and you're hostile.
- Point out the obvious and you're rude.

Sometimes, I feel that there are only two ways to get along:

1) Go along with the consensus opinion, even if your opinion is different ("Go along to get along"). This is deceitful, as you are lying about your true feelings and thoughts.

2) Say nothing at all. This is tacit approval of someone else's deceptive statements, and is also a form of deceit.

You can't win, you can't break even, and getting out of the game is the only remaining option.
