We do not know anything about this "cure"
But I find that 'Many have an inability to form their own opinions' makes no sense at all- given the variety of opinions regarding this issue, most of 'us' would be quite overwhelmed.
The people I first associated with strongly wanted to cure their children, to the point of harming them if need be. I didn't take their opinion. I have formed my own unique opinion that reflects neither extremity.
They do not. I have seen every aspie say the same thing. So many adopt the opinions of others without thinking about it. I do not see an aspie say yes to the cure.
Actually, there has been some that do want a "cure" to their autism. My ex didn't want it, I have an online friend on here who doesn't want it either.
[quote="lexis"]I have plenty of times. Also, a person can reach the same conlusion through a variety of reasons- have you ever asked them why they do not want a cure?
Besides, try asking the nt population why they disagree with certain things that go against their norms and values or why they have an opinion that they share with a majority. Chances are they won't have thought about it.[/quot
The most common reason I have seen was : I don't want to change who I am. Normal is boring,
Which goes back to the point o f my posts....How do we know what this cure does? We can'T make assumptions about it if we don't know what it does.
Who's assuming? Not me. It depends on the nature of any cure as to whether or not I'd agree with it. I don't have an opinion on something that doesn't exist yet, merely the motivations behind such a thing and what may develop from it. I can't be positive or negative about such a vague concept.
Wait, did i get a lobotomy when i wasn't paying attention?
First of all what cure?
A cure for not recognizing faces? Yeah, that could come in handy.
A cure for my oversensitivity to heat? Yeah, that'd come in handy.
A cure that fixes my balance issues? Yeah, I'd like that.
A cure for taking things too literal? Undecided on that one, I might if I ever figure out what I'm supposedly missing out on.
A cure for having to tell the truth? No thanks, I consider that a virtue.
A cure for being more analytical than others? No thanks, I consider that a virtue.
A cure for being able to spot sore spots in society? No thanks, I consider that a virtue.
I have a different perspective on things than most people around me. It's part of my job to evaluate options, form an opinion and report on it; did you just imply that I can't do my job?
Let us consider the ideas
-Some aspies do not know what they are talking about.
Yes maybe, but plenty of NTs have no idea of what they are talking about. So I think that the point is invalid. If you can come up with some hard numbers then I might may attention.
-Adopting the opinions of others is a very common trait in Aspergers. Many have an inability to form their own opinions. This is why one opinion ends up eerily similar to the other.
Doubt that, I have seen a series of different opinions on all manner of things.
-They have not been cured, so why are they making assumptions about it?
What cure exists, I have failed to see one which has been documented in the responsible academic literature. When someone can change 51% of all AS cases into NTs without nasty side effects / collateral damage, then I will accept that a cure exists. Untill then I will assume it does not exist, but if one of the readers knows of such a cure then please PM me, I would love to read about it.
The idea of a cure shocks me, what else will be viewed as a disease in need of a cure. Let us start to make a list
1. Voting for a political party which the doctor does not like
2. Chooseing a pet which the doctor does not like
3. Eating food which the doctor does not like
4. Having a sexual urge which the doctor does not share
5. Wishing to paint your house a different colour to that of the good doctors house
-A feeling of correctness is also a trait of Aspergers. They will not stop
I have no idea is that is confined to people with AS, plenty of NTs think that they are always correct.
-Many aspies take disagreement very personally.
So do many NTs
-Many aspies have a habit of worrying. This thought of a cure distracts them from their daily habits.
I am sure that many healthy humans have a few things to worry themselves, in my day to day life the idea of a "cure for AS or autism" does not distract me from my work and play. I still have the same urges to do the same pastimes in my spare time as I used to have before I was aware of these "cures". I still do the same work as I did in the past before I knew about some of the quack cures for AS and autism. I am still the same man as I was before so the hypothesis that the AS / autist is distracted from their daily habits by the thoughts of a cure has just been shown to be false.
If you look at the theroy of science then a single instance of a hypothesis being shown to be flase is able to overturn the hypothesis.

I am not a jigsaw, I am a free man ! Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

This is why we should stop this anti-cure stuff, we do not know what this cure is.
You seem to be subscribing to the "Aspies are morons and shouldn't have a right to make their own decisions" school of though.
you're not buying into hateful propaganda, are you?

I don't want others to enforce their preferences upon my behavior or personality only to please themselves. I do respect their preferences as long as they respect me, because if they don't respect me then they are "worse" than me (and their preferences are wrong) and not worthy of respect. No one has a right to demand that I become someone else that they prefer me to be.
I am driven by the desire to love and to be loved, enough to make efforts and seek treatments to fix specific behaviors that get in the way. I am very self-aware and I know that there is a problem to be fixed when there is trouble with something. If I did not have this self-awareness and desire then I think that I would be happy if I lived like a pet, like a purring cat. And then if I was suffering an inconsolable pain, then I would seek treatment for that pain.
So, I THINK that there are two kinds of "cures" we are imagining.
1.The unlikely possibility that we can be erased and reprogrammed to be "better".
2.Treatments for our symptoms of suffering. May also include "programming to be better" but without erasing who we are.
And I think, nobody wants #1 except mean evil NT's, but we all want #2.

Anyone who wants to cure me of being myself seriously needs their own head checking.
Lots of people are happy with me and claim that there is "nothing wrong" with me despite all of the labeling and nonsense that I've had to endure over the years. Those unaware of my past have said that they are happy with with who I am and said they wouldn't want to change me.
I am all for cures to help people with real physical pain/discomfort to improve their quality of life and health.
As for enforced personality modifications to cure people of their own personalities for society's convenience, I'm not so sure.
I'm not sure what the original poster is buying into, but in his signature he seems to want us to buy into dubious financial enterprises!

Please note this is from an article I read. Not my personal opinion, although I do agree with this.
If you agree with it, then it IS your personal opinion! Some jerk several years ago became WORLD FAMOUS for SUPPOSEDLY creating something! I HATE the guy! WHY!? Because he is a LIAR and a CHEAT! I did it LONG before HE did!(Yet he never alked to me) My father did it before I did!(I found out LATER!)! I could show examples of this even before my great grandparents were born! So HOW COME we had the same idea? Because it is simple and works! Liars can have MANY ideas, but the truth has fewer variants. I was once accused of listening to rush limbaugh too much EVEN though I listened to bill press(because he was in a better timeslot) FAR more! I had my ideas BEFORE I ever heard of rush limbaugh.
If I were cured, I would feel that there is a cure, obviously. Who knows, MAYBE I would like it. For over 35 years I looked for a cure for some aspects, yet there were NONE!
Feeling of correctness?
I am WILLING to be proven wrong. I am just usually proven right.
I DO worry too much, but it does NOT prevent me from taking risks.

Are you mad at him because he had the same idea as you guys but he patented it first?
It happened to my ex. He was drawing something and then he was out on Ritalin and then he couldn't draw it anymore because the Ritalin was effecting that part of his brain. Then in his teens he saw it on Ripley's Believe it Or not because someone also had the same idea and he went further with it. He was pissed.
When one of my teachers was a kid, she thought what if you could turn the channel without having to get up and do it. What if you could use something to turn the channel. Well it finally happened. Someone came up with the idea and invented it and had it patented.
My ex also had this other idea what if you could watch shows on TV and they weren't on any channel and they were all stored in a cable box. He said he already invented it because it was his idea but guess what, someone else invented it too because I have Comcast and I have On Demand and it has TV shows on it you can watch and movies and other stuff.
I don't see it as stealing. No way did anyone know someone else had those same ideas too.
I have often had ideas that someone years later has made a load of money from. Sometimes it is a new movie that has certain characters or story lines that I invented in my head. That's when I get really pissed, haha!
Back to the cure. At first I was for it, but now I understand why there are some people that are against it. Yes, I was influenced by peoples opinions but that doesn't mean I can't form an opinion on my own.
I do not like certain traits that I have at times, but at other times I see them as strengths.
If I were to be cured I would no longer be me. I don't even believe there will be such a thing. Therapy, social skills classes and other forms of treatment may just be enough to make me a functioning member of society without taking away my obsessions and other traits that come from having AS.

Well done.
You have keener eyes than most.
I'm staying well away from any "dubious financial enterprises"!
When I read about the history of science, I can often deduce the next discovery before I get to it in the book. That doesn't mean I made those discoveries, does it?
I mean, it's easy enough to figure out that black holes have to evaporate somehow; but Stephen Hawking made the connections to virtual particles LONG before I did. He's not a cheat for thinking of it first.
(I still think there's an information-loss problem... IMO.)
re. treatments... These are not universally good... I think any treatment which has as its main goal to make someone more normal will almost certainly be damaging.
