Y'know I'm not sure it ever really occurred to me before, but any time people have asked me who my heroes were in the past, I've always had to really work to come up with an answer for that question. So I guess the answer would be no, I don't feel like I really do hero worship anyone in particular. And I think it's probably safer if you're going to hero worship anyone for it to be a fictional character, because that gives you the freedom to edit the character, modify their beliefs or actions, without actually censoring a real person (or more importantly censoring history). In recent years, I've really dug the writing for the first 26 issues of DeadPool. There are real people I admire. Obama is one of them.

And I'm not overly convinced Jesus nor God want to be worshipped, per se- just appreciated.

No, you're wrong. God wants us to worship Him and only Him; to hold Him in the highest regard, above all people and things. He is "a jealous God"; He does not want us to place anything in higher importance than Him. He does not want to be merely "admired"; He wants us to praise Him, worship Him, follow Him, and most of all, love Him with all of our hearts, minds and spirits.

The inherent flaw in this quote is that other (wo)men told you that about God. And as they are other men, they can be no authority on God. Only God can be an authority on God and as God seems absent the conversation, that means we have no authority on God. :)

I have been obsessed with Sonic my whole life, and view myself as being the aspie version of him. I would say for a real life person that I am quite fond of, my dad would be that person, he is everything I want to be, and by that I don't mean what he has done, I mean who he is.

Back to the sonic thing, I watched the tv show as a kid when I could find it on tv, played the games on pc, cuz I didn't have a sega, and a whole bunch of other things... Then I lost Sonic for about 4 years... Until at my best friend's house, I saw his oldest brother playing SA2, and my love for Sonic was reignited. I have so many of the games, and the only one I can say I'm actually disappointed with is the story telling method in secret rings

Haha, that's funny 'cause I practically see myself as an aspie reincarnation of Tails =P

I grew up on Nintendo, so I didn't have any Sega consoles as a kid, either. I have a MegaDrive and a Dreamcast now, though, as well as over £3,000 worth of Sonic merchandise. Not that I'm obsessed or anything... oh noooo...

not anymore.

When I was young, I would model myself after common childhood role models, because that's what all the other kids in school did. I idealized football players on college teams that I was supposed to like. Stuff like that. As I started listening to music in earnest, I idealized Jim Morrison. I can never say that I idolized anyone. I think hero-worship and things like that can be (as others have said previously) indicative of a personal weakness, or at least a distraction from more important things.

As an adult, the person I have come closest to idealizing is Henry David Thoreau. His writings and philosophy and way of life in general, I really identify with. However, I don't want to be him. I've learned things from him, and tried to apply them to my life. But that's what people do with any outside influences. I read a good book, and I think, "wow! this author has some outstanding ideas!" I hear a good song, and I am enraptured. I respect the musicians and want to hear more of their music.

I guess the act of idealizing someone is too strong of a concept for what I do. I am interested in a number of people and what they do. Mostly authors, musicians, artists and scientists. But I leave it at that.

No, but I've seen the Sonic + co statues they had there, and also the hack with playing as them. Epic.

It was an amazing game... Too bad they ruined it by making PSU (phantasy star universe)....

How would I define who I am, I actually turn to Sonic to get the best words:

It doesn't matter,
now what happens.
I will never give,
up the fight.
Long as the voice inside drives me to run and fight,
it doesn't matter who is wrong and who is right.

Odd thing is, I was also damn fast until I put on weight... Then what happened is I stopped running... When I palyed football, I was the fastest guy on my team, I played corner, even though I could hit like a truck, and if I could get a hold of even just your shirt, you had to drag my body with you down the field. On the grip thing, to join the Canadian military, you need a combined grip of at least 70, my combined grip is 130. Unfortunatly, my strength is no where near my grip and speed in its ability. What was worse, was I did track as well, and every time I ran the 100m I was sick enough that I couldn't give it my all... but I would still come in second by a very small fraction of a second.

How common is this amongst the members of WP? I ask this becuase I assume that most aspies or auties may not relate easily to other people in their lives and thus may associate hero worship tendencies towards people who they have never met ie. Scientists, Mathematicians etc and other famous people. However I have a feeling this isn't just confined to real people but also to fictional characters from anime, computer games and television...

Is there someone you idealize???

I read this post, though, yeah, I relate, then read the first few replies all saying nope. :)

Yeah, for most of my life the people I saw as heroes or idealized were people I didn't know. And it was comfortable having those people be safely distant. Though lack of people in my real life who were the right kind of people for me to idealize certainly may have played a factor too.

For me, basically, musicians. I'm very into music for so long was the way I felt connected to other people. My way of not being alone. (It still does that, but it's not the sole way anymore. Except indirectly by fostering friendships.)

But, then, I got a crush on a guy in a local band. Who noticed me and approached me. And thus I had this person I idealized who was someone I know. And he definitely has aspie/autistic traits.

And there's another local musician who, I don't idealize him, but, I look up to him a lot. He's been a good role model for me. That's because I do relate to him a lot. I don't think of him as on the spectrum, but, then, he's in his 50s so it's hard to judge for externals, and I certainly don't see him as NT, and, like I said, he's a lot like me in certain ways. Perhaps I think on the edge of the spectrum, somewhere between aspie and NT.
