I don't know that I ever was 'in the closet' about it; when I started the self-discovery after my son was diagnosed, I asked those I knew to take part as a control group and to ask them for anecdotes of what they remembered about me as a child. My wife balked at first, yet as she read more it grew from fear of an excuse to understanding the causal relationships that exist between the world and my responses. I don't advertise it, but I've talked to customers at my store about it as well.

I didn't have any problems telling people. My son is a 10 year old Aspie, so I simply said I have what my son has.

I told my parents, my best friend and her husband, and my husband's grandmother, and my supervisor.

Reactions:

Parents: Acceptance.

Best friend and husband: they said it made sense.

Husband's grandmother: "Well, I'll be!"

Supervisor: she said she could have told me 3 years ago when she met me. She just assumed I knew already.
